A glass manufacturing apparatus includes a delivery tube terminating at a lower end in a delivery slot. A stream of molten material is delivered along a travel plane in a travel direction. A first plate is positioned adjacent the lower end of the delivery tube on a first side of the travel plane. The first plate includes a first edge extending adjacent the travel plane and a first thermal expansion slot extending from the first edge to a first interior. A second plate is positioned adjacent the lower end of the delivery tube on a second side of the travel plane. The second plate includes a second edge extending adjacent the travel plane and a second thermal expansion slot extending from the second edge to a second interior. The second edge is spaced apart from the first edge to define a delivery opening through which the delivery tube extends.

Methods for making a glass article are described that include flowing molten glass through a metallic vessel, and supplying alternating electrical currents to multiple electrical circuits, each electrical circuit including a power supply, a pair of adjacent electrical flanges connected to the power supply, and a portion of the metallic vessel extending between and in electrical communication with the pair of adjacent flanges. At least two adjacent electrical circuits of the multiple electrical circuits share an electrical flange that is a common electrical path for the two adjacent electrical circuits, the two adjacent electrical circuits being supplied with alternating electrical currents, wherein at least one of the electrical currents is cut by a phase-fired controller.

Methods for heating a metallic vessel in a glass making process

An assembly provides electrical current to molten glass in a glass melting tank. The assembly includes a structure having an electrode that is in contact with the molten glass, and a fluid-cooled connection apparatus. The fluid-cooled connection apparatus includes a first connection element electrically connected to a current source and a second connection element electrically connected to the current source, where the first and second connection elements are spaced apart from each other; and an electrical cross-connect strut having a first end secured to the first connection element and a second end secured to the second connection element. The assembly also includes a bus bar electrically connected to the fluid-cooled connection apparatus and to an electrode. The current source provides a current to the molten glass via the structure and the electrode for heating the molten glass through resistive heating.

Disclosed is an apparatus and method of making molten glass. The apparatus includes a glass former having a slot orifice design to deliver a glass ribbon. The slot orifice design can include a transition section, a slot extension, and external structural reinforcements. In some embodiments, the orifice opening distance of the slot extension varies along the width of the orifice. In some embodiments, the orifice has an orifice opening distance that is smaller at the center of the slot extension than at the edges of the slot extension, which limits glass flow at the center of the slot extension. Also disclosed is a method of making glass using the disclosed apparatus.

The apparatus includes a vessel for conveying the molten glass and at least one flange configured to supply an electric current to the vessel through the flange, the flange including a first ring extending completely around the vessel in a closed loop, the first ring comprising a first portion including a first thickness and a second portion including a second thickness different from the first thickness, wherein the first portion and the second portion overlap in a plane of the flange such that at least a portion of the first portion is positioned between at least a portion of the second portion and the vessel wall, and neither the first portion nor the second portion extends completely around the vessel. Also disclosed is a method of making glass using the disclosed flange.

Disclosed is an apparatus and method of making molten glass. Method and apparatus for minimizing inclusions in a glass making process

An apparatus for forming a glass sheet with reduced zircon inclusions in the glass sheet is disclosed. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises heating elements distributed vertically between the weirs of a forming wedge and the root of the forming wedge, and wherein a thermal barrier is disposed between adjacent heating elements. An apparatus for use in direct resistance heating of a molten glass-carrying vessel, such as a finer or connecting pipe, is provided. The apparatus comprises a flange comprises a plurality of electrically-conductive rings that include an inner ring joined to the vessel's exterior wall during use of the flange and an outer ring that receives electric current during use of the flange. The innermost ring comprises a high-temperature resistant metal preferably comprising at least 80% platinum, and the outermost ring preferably comprising at least 99.0% nickel. This combination of materials both increases the reliability of the flange and reduces its cost. Either one or both of the width or thickness of one or both of the inner or outer rings varies as a function of angular position relative to the vessel. The width and/or thickness of the inner and the outer rings with relation to each other produces a uniform current distribution in the flange and the vessel.
