A method for improving the sensitivity of a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, especially one which is mounted on a movable platform, includes the step of obtaining a background spectrum and an analytical spectrum from an interferogram, and determining the absorption spectrum from the analytical spectrum and the background spectrum. Then, a classical least squares analysis is applied to the absorption spectrum, with reference to a reference spectrum. The classical least squares analysis removes the bias term, and the first and the second-order correction terms related to frequency from the measured absorption spectrum. The method preferably includes two feedback paths in which the background spectrum used in the analysis is derived from a current background spectrum and previously occurring, co-added background spectra using a weighted average approach. The other feedback path involves using one or more alternative reference spectra should a saturation condition exist.

Method and apparatus for on-the-move detection of chemical agents using

An improved method for use with an open-path fast Fourier infrared spectrometer performs real-time, spectral alignment on measured interferograms to reduce measuremental errors. The improved method includes the step of selecting a plurality of water-vapor lines in a defined spectral region and comparing the centerline of these measured water vapor lines to a reference library. From these comparisons, the spectrometer calculates correction factors to apply to the spectrometer bandwidth. The improved spectrometer performs transform functions on selected segments of the spectrometer bandwidth which introduce integer-continuous corrective shifts on subsequently measured interferogram data.

Apparatus and method for real-time spectral alignment for open-path

Method and apparatus for processing on-line operands A, B and C to produce the arithmetic expression S=(A.times.B)+C. In general, the apparatus includes an input processing unit, an on-line multiplication unit, and an on-line serial addition unit. The input processing unit is sequentially introducing the digits of operands, A, B and C into the apparatus, where each digit is represented in a redundant binary number format. The multiplication unit multiplies the sequence of digits of the operands A and B to produce the n-th product digit p.sub.n of the product P=A.times.B, with the most significant digit p.sub.o being computed first. The on-line addition unit adds the n-th product digit to the n-th digit of on-line operand C, so as to produce the n-th digit s.sub.n of the arithmetic expression S=(A.times.B)+C, with the most significant digit s.sub.o being produced first. In one embodiment, the input processing unit includes a selective conversion subunit for selectively converting the digits of operands A, B and C sequentially entering the computational device, so that each digit is represented in a redundant number format. In such an embodiment, the redundant binary number format is characterized by signed digit numbers, and the selective conversion subunit includes a binary-to-signed digit converter.

Method and apparatus for computing arithmetic expressions using on-line

A dual path switch (DPS) circuit for interfacing between arithmetic elements of a computer for performing Fast Fourier Transforms. The ratio of power consumption to signal resolution is very low. The DPS has very high frequency resolution, and to conserve power, many of its registers are reset to a logic low status when they are not in use. The DPS includes a diagnostic system which, upon a hardware failure, identifies the faulty gate and specifies the nature of the fault. The diagnostic system also provides a fault signal for use in testing for the mean time between failures.
