An apparatus for use by a communication network control element or function configured to conduct a radio resource management, the apparatus being configured to cause the apparatus at least: to acquire input parameters; to process the input parameters by using a first-stage procedure for maximizing a weighted sum-rate for a fixed subcarrier allocation for all subcarriers, and a second-stage procedure for determining a power allocation for a single subcarrier under consideration of specified multiplexing and interference cancellation constraints wherein a processing result output from the first-stage procedure is input into the second-stage procedure, and a processing result output from the second-stage procedure is returned to the first-stage procedure; and to output, on the basis of results of the processing in the first-stage procedure and the second-stage procedure, a power setting for at least one subcarrier.

Method and apparatus for maximizing weighted sum rate

An apparatus including circuitry configured for: controlling transmission from the apparatus to at least two user equipment within a communications system, wherein the circuitry is further configured for: controlling transmission of data signals for one of the at least two user equipment for a first slot of a direct transmission phase from the apparatus to the at least two user equipment within the communications system, such that: the one of the at least two user equipment is configured to receive and decode the data signals; and at least one other of the at least two user equipment is configured to receive and harvest energy from the data signals for relaying data signals to the one of the at least two user equipment for a cooperative transmission phase; controlling transmission of data signals for both the one of the at least two user equipment and at least one other of the at least two user equipment for a second slot of a direct transmission phase from the apparatus to the at least two user equipment within the communications system.

A method of optimising a network includes selecting an operating characteristic of a network to optimise; determining at least one operating parameter of network nodes within the network which affects the operating characteristic; selecting an optimisable network node from within the network; identifying a cluster of the network nodes whose operating characteristic is affected by a change in the at least one operating parameter of the optimisable network node; iteratively adjusting the at least one operating parameter of the optimisable network node; determining the operating characteristic of the cluster of the network nodes in response to that adjusted at least one operating parameter of the optimisable network node; and selecting that adjusted at least one operating parameter of the optimisable network node which improves the operating characteristic of the cluster of the network nodes.

Network optimisation

A method for attaching a user terminal to a base station of a network is disclosed, said network comprising base stations. The method including defining a global cost function which is a weighted sum of the user terminal transmission delays, over all the user terminals in the network, using a user terminal's context weighting factor representing a user terminal's characteristic; defining a local cost function for each user terminal from said global cost function, said local cost function taking into account said user terminal's context weighting factor for each user terminal, and being a function of the base station to which this user terminal is associated; running a Gibbs sampler with said local cost function for producing user-base station association probabilities; choosing the user-base station association probability which favors low local cost; and attaching said user terminal to a base station according to the user-base station association probability chosen.

Method for attaching a user terminal to a base station of a network

In a communication system, a plurality of communication entities can establish a plurality of communication links that can potentially interfere with each other. A control of the communication system involves repetitively carrying out a probabilistic parameter setting step for respective communication links. In such a probabilistic parameter setting step, a parameter setting to be applied to a communication link is randomly determined according to a probability distribution. This probability distribution is such that a probability that a particular parameter setting is applied decreases with, on the one hand, a relative level of interference that the communication link is expected to experience from other communication links if the particular parameter setting is applied and, on the other hand, a relative level of interference that other communication links are expected to experience if the particular parameter setting is applied.
