A method and apparatus may include receiving, by a machine type communication user equipment, parameters for frequency hopping in downlink or uplink. The parameters comprise an 'X,' 'Y,' and &#x201c;Z&#x201d; parameters, &#x201c;X&#x201d; corresponds to a duration for which the same physical resource blocks are used for transmission. &#x201c;Y&#x201d; corresponds to a frequency hopping period, and &#x201c;Z&#x201d; corresponds to a frequency hopping pattern indication. The method may also include performing frequency hopping in accordance with the parameters.

There are provided measures for common control deactivation in carrier aggregation, said measures exemplarily including a configuration of a secondary carrier for carrier aggregation with a primary carrier of a terminal, including a deactivation of a common control for the secondary carrier, an indication of the deactivation of the common control for the secondary carrier via the primary carrier, and a signaling of control information, substituting control information of the deactivated common control, for facilitating selection of or operation on the secondary carrier without the deactivated common control via the primary carrier from a base station to the terminal. Said measures may exemplarily be applied for common control deactivation in carrier aggregation in heterogeneous network environments based on LTE, LTE-Advanced, HSPA and/or UMTS radio access systems.

Techniques are disclosed for ACK/NAK bit bundling in carrier aggregation scenarios. Such measures exemplarily comprise generating a set of acknowledgement bits confirming receipt of payload data of a radio frame in a carrier aggregation mode aggregating a primary and at least one secondary carrier, said radio frame being divided into a plurality of downlink subframes and uplink subframes, each of said downlink subframes comprising at least one codeword per carrier, each of said acknowledgement bits is allocated to one of said codewords of one of said downlink subframes, and applying spatial domain bundling and/or time domain bundling on said set of acknowledgement bits distinctive for each of said primary and said at least one secondary carrier, wherein said spatial domain bundling is an AND operation of all acknowledgement bits allocated to each codeword of one carrier of said primary and said at least one secondary carrier and one downlink subframe.

Various communication systems may benefit from techniques for handling inter-band carrier aggregation (CA). For example, systems of the third generation partnership project (3GPP) long term evolution (LTE) advanced (LTE-A) may benefit from a uplink (UL) downlink (DL) configuration zero handling, particularly in cases where there is no physical hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) indicator channel (PHICH). For example, certain embodiments may be applicable to inter-band CA having different UL/DL configuration in use. A method can include triggering in a downlink subframe a first physical uplink shared channel transmission in a first hybrid automatic repeat request process. The method can also include triggering in the downlink subframe a second physical uplink shared channel transmission in a second hybrid automatic repeat request process. The secondary cell can be configured with time division duplex uplink/downlink configuration number zero. The triggerings can be performed by means of a single uplink grant but without a hybrid automatic repeat request indicator.

A base station determines a first set of PUCCH resources to use for a first set of UEs to send acknowledgment information to the base station for a first group of DL subframes. The first set of PUCCH resources starts at a first index. The base station determines a second set of PUCCH resources to use for a second set of UEs to send acknowledgment information to the base station for a second group of DL subframes. The second set of PUCCH resources starts at a second index. The UEs in the first set only use the first set of PUCCH resources. The UEs in the second set use the first and second sets of PUCCH resources. For an UL reception, acknowledgement information is received from the first UEs using the first set of PUCCH resources and from the second UEs using the first and second sets of PUCCH resources.
