A recording/reproducing apparatus having an optical pickup device which is efficient in light use having little spherical aberration. The recording and/or reproducing apparatus includes an optical pickup having an objective lens, disposed opposite a disk, having a light passing region divided into central, intermediate and periphery regions corresponding to a near axis area, an intermediate axis area and a far axis area of incident light, where the curvature of the central and peripheral regions is optimized for a thin disk and that of the intermediate region is optimized for a thick disk, a light source irradiating light toward a disk through the objective lens; a photo detector for detecting light reflected from the disk, and a beam splitter, disposed between the objective lens and the light source, for transmitting light from the light source toward the objective lens and for diffracting light reflected from the disks toward the photo detector; and a processing unit to process an information signal to control the incident light generated by the light source, and to process the detected light from the photodetector. Therefore, the optical pickup device can be used for both compact disks (CDs) that are thick using light beam passing the near and intermediate regions of said objective lens, and digital video disks (DVDs) that are thin using light beam passing the near and far axis regions of said objective lens, and detect signals without picking up noise regardless of the thickness of the disk.

Accordingly, not only is the recording density maximized, but the HDD can be small and light as well.

Alternative designs include a transmission-type display device in place of the reflection-type display device and a deflector changing the proceeding paths of the individual color rays separated by the color separation unit instead of the driving portion.

An encoder is capable of being used to compensate for the tilting of a movable object in an apparatus. The encoder includes a fixed scale, and a movable scale integrated with an object that moves during an operation of the apparatus and having a plurality of patterns that are out of phase from each other with respect to the direction of movement of the object. The encoder may be employed by a hard disk drive (HDD) and a servo track recording apparatus. The movable scale is integrated with an actuator arm of the HDD for positioning a read/write head of the HDD, and the fixed scale is fixed to the housing of the HDD. The servo track recording apparatus can use the encoder to record servo track information precisely on a disk.

An actuator latch system of a hard disk drive (HDD) retains a rotatable swing arm of the HDD in place when a magnetic head of the HDD is parked. The actuator latch system includes a portion of the swing arm that defines a notch at an end portion of a swing arm, and a latch lever that has first and second hooks at one end thereof. The latch lever is disposed on the base member adjacent the end portion of the swing arm and is supported so as to be rotatable. The first hook is disposed to contact the swing arm within a short period of time after a shock transmitted to the swing arm while the magnetic head is parked causes the swing arm to rotate in one direction. Thus, the impulse on the swing arm is minimized and the reliability of the actuator latch system is enhanced.

The head stack assembly of a hard disk drive includes a bobbin, and a printed circuit board attached to the bobbin. The bobbin forms an end of the head stack assembly that is rotatable about an axis of a shaft. The printed circuit board has a flat conductive pattern of a plurality of traces through which current is supplied. The conductive pattern constitutes the voice coil motor of the hard disk drive. The hard disk drive has magnets disposed above and below the bobbin, respectively, to generate a magnetic field across the conductive pattern such that an electromotive force that rotates the HSA is produced when current flows through the conductive pattern. The flat conductive pattern allows the voice coil motor to be relatively thin while the magnets need to encompass only a small region making the hard disk drive compact and lightweight.

The HGA protecting member may include a finger restricting excessive movement of the suspension. The finger may further have a flexure supporting portion supporting the free end of the flexure.
