Method and apparatus for identifying the type of optical recording medium

A lens position determination apparatus of an optical pickup includes a lens holder with a mounted lens, a base supporting the lens holder, and a pressing member. The base has an accommodation surface accommodating the lens holder and a pair of facing support walls on the accommodation surface. The pressing member is a bendable arm. A first elastic portion between arm end portions applies an elastic force in a direction in which the arm end portions closely contact the support walls. A second elastic portion connected to the arm presses the lens holder toward the accommodation surface to fix the lens holder position. The lens adjustment can be performed while the pressing force to fix the lens holder to the base is removed by bending the pressing member into a V shape to reduce frictional resistance of the lens holder with the base during the adjustment.

A pickup tilt adjustment apparatus in a disk player which includes a deck and a pickup. The pickup adjusting apparatus includes at least one pair of guide shafts installed on the deck and for supporting and guiding the pickup. Each of the guide shafts has a hole at least one end thereof. An adjusting member is inserted into each hole and threadedly engaged with the deck. A spring is installed between each of the guide shafts and the deck and provides a resistive force against a rotation of the adjusting member and biases the guide shafts away from the deck, thereby to maintain an appropriate distance between the deck and each of the guide shafts.

In a disk player, an optical pickup unit which is supported by guide shafts installed on a base records/reproduces information by emitting an optical beam onto a disk while moving along the guide shafts. A lead screw which is rotated by a transfer motor transfers a driving force to move the optical pickup unit. A tilt of the optical pickup unit is adjusted by an adjustment portion which moves up and down first ends of the guide shafts. A power transfer portion has a threaded portion which is to be coupled to the lead screw and installed at the optical pickup unit to be capable of relatively rotating with respect to the optical pickup unit. As the optical pickup unit moves up or down, the power transfer portion and the optical pickup unit rotate relative to each other so that the gear engagement state between the threaded portion and the lead screw can be maintained.

An optical disk drive adopting an optical disk as a recording medium is provided. The optical disk drive includes an adjusting mechanism on a deck to adjust phase and tilt. The adjusting mechanism includes a phase adjusting device which is installed on the deck, for supporting one end of at least one of first and second shafts to adjust the phase, and a complex adjusting device which is rotatably installed on the deck, for supporting the other end of the at least one shaft to adjust the tilt and phase. Therefore, the optical disk drive can store a large amount of information in a disk by a highly precise deck mechanism and be stably installed regardless of the installation direction and position thereof. Further, a tray can be ejected without electric power and simple and convenient assembling and maintenance thereof are guaranteed.

An optical recording and reproducing apparatus includes a deck, a turntable disposed on the deck and for loading an optical disc, an optical pickup having through holes, guide shafts inserted into the through holes for slidably guiding the optical pickup, and a plurality of guide shaft holder members rotatably fixed on the deck. Each of the guide shaft holder members has one side where an insertion hole for inserting and supporting an end of a corresponding one of the guide shafts is formed. A plurality of protrusions is formed in each insertion hole for contacting with an external diameter surface of the end of the corresponding guide shaft inserted therein. According to the optical recording and reproducing apparatus, the holder is operative for controlling an angle of the corresponding guide shaft, so that the angle on the horizontal plane of the guide shaft can be easily controlled.
