A sampler apparatus is disclosed. The sampler apparatus comprises an impactor assembly comprising a nozzle plate, an impaction plate, and a filter unit. The nozzle plate comprises a plurality of nozzles for channelling an air stream through the sampler apparatus. The impaction plate is adapted to collect particulate matter having size equal to or greater than a threshold size. The filter unit is adapted to collect particulate matter having size less than or equal to the threshold size. The sampler apparatus further comprises a control assembly coupled with the impactor assembly. The control assembly comprises one or more flow control devices to maintain a predetermined air-flow rate of the air stream within the sampler apparatus.

Particulate matter sampler

A cyclone is used to collect nanoparticles and is formed of a chamber, and a guide wing located in the chamber such that the guide wing and the chamber form a passage. A flow entraining the nanoparticles is moved through the passage in such a way that the flow is caused to spin rapidly, and that the nanoparticles, acted on by a centrifugal force, are thereby resulting in collision with the chamber wall. The cyclone has a nanoparticle cut-off aerodynamic diameter, which is reduced by virtue of the phenomena that the particle inertia increases in a low pressure environment, and that the particle slipping correction factor increases under low pressure, and that the rebound of the particle in the cyclone chamber tends to alleviate under low pressure. The cyclone is used to remove nanoparticles from industrial exhaust fumes.

Method of collecting nanoparticles by using a cyclone and method of designing the cyclone

An inertial impactor with a specially designed impaction plate has a nozzle protruding from a nozzle plate, and an impaction plate formed with a conical recess covered by an orifice plate and a circular impaction plane at the bottom of the recess having a diameter slightly greater than that of the diameter of the nozzle. The impactor reduces loss of particles due to rebounding or blowing off particles from the impaction plate so as to increase particle collection efficiency and capacity, permit a quick accumulation of the particles on the bottom of the conical recess, and increase collection efficiency accordingly.
