A communication system is disclosed comprised of a primary Ethernet broadcast system, a node, and a secondary Ethernet broadcast system. The primary Ethernet broadcast system broadcasts multiple video channels each corresponding to an Ethernet address. The node receives a request for a video channel. The node determines the Ethernet address of the selected video channel and transmits a response to the request that includes the Ethernet address of the selected video channel.

Video channel broadcast using ethernet technology

A server system provides admission control for a communication system where Point-to-Point Protocol Over Ethernet (PPPOE) user systems transfer requests to use the communication system and transfer bandwidth usage information indicating their respective bandwidth usage. The server system receives the bandwidth usage information and receives the requests. The server system processes the bandwidth usage information to determine average system bandwidth usage. The server system processes an available system bandwidth and the average system bandwidth usage to determine a maximum bandwidth authorization. The server system determines if the maximum bandwidth authorization exceeds a threshold in response to one of the requests. If the maximum bandwidth authorization exceeds the threshold, then the server system grants the request, but if the maximum bandwidth authorization does not exceed the threshold, then the server system denies the request.

Session admission control for communication systems that use point-to-point protocol over ethernet

A user system uses a called number to establish a telephone call over a public telephone network to a called party. In response to the telephone call, the user system transfers a video call request to a server system over a public data network. The server system uses the called telephone number to check a database to determine if the called party is ready to receive video calls. If the called party is ready and accepts the video call, the server system exchanges video between the caller and called parties over the public data network.
