The invention relates to a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and methods for using the catalyst in a water-splitting process. The invention also provides a composition, a material and an electrode comprising the catalyst. In particular, the invention relates to a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst comprising a catalytic metal species comprising an active catalyst species and a vanadium species; wherein the catalytic metal species and the vanadium species are interspersed within the HER catalyst.

Disclosed herein are batteries and methods of making batteries. The batteries disclosed herein generally comprise a cathode, an electrolyte capable of conducting protons and/or hydronium ions, and an anode comprising a material capable of absorbing protons and/or hydronium ions, wherein (i) the cathode is in contact with a cathode substance, or (ii) the electrolyte comprises a reduced cathode substance, or (iii) the cathode is in contact with a cathode substance and the electrolyte comprises a reduced cathode substance, and wherein the cathode substance is an oxide of one or more metals or an oxide of a halide.

The present invention relates to a method for improving the catalytic activity of an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst comprising a substrate with a catalytic metallic composite coating. The method comprises exposing the metallic composite coating to a reducing agent to thereby increase oxygen vacancy density in the metallic composite coating.

Disclosed herein is a catalytic assembly comprising a porous electrically conductive substrate, and a porous metallic composite coating the substrate, where the catalytic assembly has a three dimensional interpenetrating porous structure, where the substrate has a three dimensional interpenetrating porous structure having a first average pore diameter (PD), and the porous metallic composite is amorphous and has a three dimensional interpenetrating porous structure having a second average pore diameter (PD), the PDbeing sufficiently smaller than the PDto allow the porous metallic composite to coat substrate surfaces throughout the substrate including surfaces of pores in the substrate. The catalytic assembly may be suitable for use as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts, among others.
