A method for calibrating a motor is provided. The method includes defining a reference speed for operating the motor; operating the motor until a first operating point at which the motor reaches the reference speed; measuring a first current of the motor and an angular acceleration associated with the first current at the first operating point; operating the motor until a second operating point at which the motor reaches the reference speed; measuring a second current of the motor at the second operating point; and estimating a calibration coefficient for calibrating the motor based at least on the first current, the second current, and the angular acceleration associated with the first current.

Self-calibration of ECM motor and variable frequency drive inferred torque

Systems and methods for determining the health of a compressor are disclosed. In one embodiment, a prognostic-diagnostic unit (PDU) compares expected compressor power consumption, based on current operating conditions of the HVAC system, to actual compressor power consumption. If the actual power consumption is within a predefined range of the expected power consumption under current operational conditions, the HVAC system is determined to be operating properly. If the actual power consumption deviates from the expected power consumption, a fault is indicated. An appropriate action is taken, such as displaying a fault alert, transmitting a fault message to another device, and storing information relating to the fault for later retrieval to assist troubleshooting.

HVAC compressor prognostics

A compressor heating system includes a compressor drive controller electrically coupled to an outdoor controller configured to selectively implement a pulse width modulation algorithm to deliver a pulsed direct current (DC) from the compressor drive controller to at least one stator winding of a motor of a variable speed compressor to provide heat to the compressor to prevent refrigerant migration to the compressor when the compressor remains idle with respect to operating in a cooling or heating mode.

Compressor heating system

A power factor optimized variable speed drive unit for an electric motor of an HVAC device is disclosed. In an embodiment, the unit includes a selectively-activatable power factor correction unit operatively associated with a switched mode power supply unit. A power measurement unit measures the input power of the electric motor. A comparator unit compares the motor input power to a predetermined threshold. The comparator unit activates the power factor correction unit when the input power of the electric motor is above the threshold, and deactivates the power factor correction unit when the input power of the electric motor falls below the threshold. In an embodiment, motor input power is determined by the product of motor load current and motor speed.

Detection of reverse rotation or operation of a refrigerant compressor is provided. In one aspect, a detection technique includes starting the compressor and determining the compressor is rotating in a reverse direction if a dome temperature of the compressor fails to exceed a first predetermined threshold at or before expiration of a first predetermined period of time following starting, the refrigerant pressure at a refrigerant inlet of the compressor remains constant for a second predetermined period of time following starting, and/or the frequency of pressure oscillations of the refrigerant at the refrigerant inlet exceeds a second predetermined threshold. Another technique for determining the compressor is rotating in the reverse direction involves analyzing a waveform associated with motor current, motor torque, or refrigerant pressure. Further embodiments, forms, features, and aspects shall become apparent from the description and drawings.

Variable frequency drive apparatuses, systems, and methods and controls for same

One embodiment is a diagnostic method for a system including setting a first diagnostic code based upon a condition of a DC bus of a variable frequency drive during a first drive state, setting at least one additional diagnostic code based upon a condition of at least one motor phase current during a second drive state, outputting first diagnostic information indicating a malfunction of the variable frequency drive if the first diagnostic code indicates a first error, and outputting second diagnostic information indicating a malfunction of a motor or a connector coupling the motor and the drive if the at least one additional diagnostic code indicates a second error.
