A punched gimbal dimple with an annular coined periphery extending outward from the dimple in a head suspension and a method for producing such a dimple. The dimple and its coined periphery are fabricated from a dimple punch and a die with a raised coining surface. The coined area on the dimple periphery can be seen by optical systems as a shiny ring, which is useful for aligning a slider to the dimple. The coined periphery is also less distorted by dimple punching than a non-coined periphery.

A disk drive suspension has a mount plate, an outwardly tapered load beam supported by the mount plate and having a base portion, a hinge portion, a beam portion having a first face with turned edges and a flexure supported by the beam portion distally of said beam portion face, and a generally congruent tapered stiffener having a central portion of a given height that is concave and open to the beam portion. The stiffener has left and right flange portions extending laterally from the central portion to the beam portion upturned edges to locate said central portion centrally on the beam portion face.

Disk drive suspension having a base portion, a spring portion and elongated beam portion mounting a flexure. The spring portion is reticulated throughout substantially its entire extent in a manner to decrease the vertical stiffness of the suspension while increasing its sway mode resonance. The beam portion is stiffened with a series of shallow etchings or through apertures located between ribs emanating from the center of the beam portion.

In a disk drive suspension the load beam is tapered to a tip and the tip is radiused to form a gimbaling locus for a flexure tongue in lieu of conventional dimple constructions.
