Beam shaping optic for light sources

An optical system includes an illumination layer, an optical combiner, and an active optics block. The illumination layer includes an array of point light sources configured to emit calibration light. The optical combiner is configured to pass visible light to a front side of the optical system and to direct the calibration light to a camera that generates an image in response to the calibration light. The image includes an array of points corresponding to the array of point light sources. The active optics block includes an adjustable lens disposed between the illumination layer and the optical combiner and is configured to pass the calibration light to the optical combiner and to focus the visible light. The active optics block is further configured to adjust an optical power of the adjustable lens based on the image of the array of points.

Active optics feedback and calibration

A near-eye optical device includes a transparent layer, an in-field illuminator, and a diffractive optical element (DOE). The in-field illuminator is configured to emit near-infrared light centered around a first wavelength. The diffractive optical element is configured to be illuminated by the near-infrared light emitted by the in-field illuminator. The DOE generates a structured light projection that includes dots that expand as the structured light projection propagates farther from the DOE. The structured light projection is directed to illuminate an eyebox.

In-field illuminator for eye depth sensing

A configuration circuit may be used with a power converter. The configuration circuit dynamically reconfigures one or more connections of output stages of a power converter to vary the output. A capacitive load may receive the output of the power converter.

Configuration circuit for reconfigurable output

A device includes a light source, a waveguide layer, and a light director layer. The light source emits illumination light. The waveguide layer includes a cladding layer and an optical waveguide. The cladding layer provides a top planar surface of the waveguide layer and the optical waveguide is immersed in the cladding layer and includes a light input coupler. The light director layer includes a bottom planar surface that is disposed on the top planar surface of the waveguide layer. The light director layer also includes a light director that receives and directs the illumination light to the light input coupler as shaped light. The light director is configured to tilt the illumination light to give the shaped light a tilt angle with respect to the light input coupler.

Coupling light source to photonic integrated circuit

A plurality of light sources such as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are configured to emit non-visible light through emission apertures. Optics are formed over the emission apertures of the plurality of light sources. The optics may provide different tilt angles or divergence angles to the non-visible light emitted by the light sources in the plurality of light sources.

The disclosure includes optical systems and near-eye optical elements configured to suppress stray infrared light. Infrared illuminators illuminator an eyebox area with narrow-band infrared illumination light for eye-tracking. A combiner layer receives reflected infrared light reflected of an eye of the user and directs the reflected infrared light to a camera configured to capture eye-tracking images of an eye of a user. An anti-reflection (AR) coating may be disposed on a base curvature to reduce Fresnel reflections that generate stray light. A ghost suppression component may be paired with the infrared illuminators to reduce stray light becoming incident on the camera.

A power converter includes an input circuit, an output circuit, and a configuration circuit. The input circuit is configured to receive an input voltage or current. The output circuit is electrically isolated from the input circuit and is configured to generate a combined output voltage or a combined output current in response to the input circuit. The output circuit includes a plurality of output stages that are each configured to generate a respective partial output voltage or current. The configuration circuit is coupled to the plurality of output stages to dynamically reconfigure a connection among the plurality of output stages to combine the respective partial output voltages or currents to adjust the combined output voltage, the combined output current, or a combined output impedance of the power converter.

Power converter with reconfigurable output

An optical system for a head mounted display (HMD) includes a display layer, an illumination layer, an optical combiner, and an active optics block. The display layer is configured to emit display light and the illumination layer includes an array of point light sources configured to emit calibration light. The optical combiner is configured to pass the display light to a front side of the optical system and to direct the calibration light to a camera. The active optics block includes an adjustable lens disposed between the illumination layer and the optical combiner, where the adjustable lens is configured to pass the calibration light to the optical combiner and to focus the display light for a user of the HMD. The active optics block is further configured to adjust an optical power of the adjustable lens based on a calibration image captured by the camera responsive to the calibration light.

A curable liquid is provided to a mold having a rigid surface disposed opposite a deformable surface. The curable liquid contacts the rigid surface and the deformable surface. The deformable surface is shaped according to a surface profile by driving actuators configured to move the deformable surface. The curable liquid is cured while the deformable surface is shaped according to the surface profile.

An eye is illuminated with a first non-visible light wavelength and a second non-visible light wavelength. A first ocular image is captured from first reflected light having the first non-visible light wavelength and a second ocular image is captured from second reflected light having the second non-visible light wavelength.

Aspects of an illumination layer of a near-eye optical element for a head mounted display (HMD) are provided herein. The illumination layer includes a plurality of in-field light sources and a keep-out zone. The in-field light sources are configured to emit infrared light to illuminate an eye of a user of the HMD for imaging of the eye by an eye-tracking camera. The keep-out zone includes a center that is to be aligned with a center of the eye when the eye is in a centered orientation, where the in-field light sources are arranged within the illumination layer outside of the keep-out zone.
