A contraband detection system is provided. The contraband detection system includes an X-ray system including a front X-ray transmitter/detector and a rear X-ray transmitter/detector. The contraband detection system further includes a quadrupole resonance (QR) system comprising a first QR coil, and a second QR coil, wherein the first and second QR coils are located between the front and rear X-ray transmitter/detectors, and wherein the first and second QR coils are constructed from a material having a low mass attenuation coefficient and a high conductivity such that the first and second QR coils do not substantially interfere with transmitting X-rays and detecting emitted photons using the X-ray system. The contraband detection system further comprise a computing device coupled to the X-ray system and the QR system, the computing device configured to detect contraband based on signals received from the X-ray system and the QR system.

Systems and methods for detecting contraband using quadrupole resonance and X-ray detection

A method of operating a screening system includes applying an electromagnetic field to a subject in a region at least partially enclosed by electromagnetic shielding, and measuring an output from a sensor. The output is representative of an interaction of the electromagnetic field and the subject. A trace vapor is collected from the subject within the region, and the trace vapor is identified. Based on the measured sensor output and the identified trace vapor, whether a target material is associated with the subject is determined.

Screening system and method for operating the same

An inspection system positions a balancing shim to asymmetrically balance a magnetic field generated by an inductive sensor, which forms part of the inspection system. Additionally, relays and capacitors used to tune the inductive sensor to a desired resonance frequency are geometrically arranged to minimize electrical interference generated by operation of the relays and capacitors. A shielding device, which may be formed on a printed circuit board, protects a magnetic field generated by the inductive sensor from external electromagnetic interference. A slot positioned in the inductive sensor may be used to tune a resonant mode of the inductive sensor to accurately and particularly detect metallic shanks and/or other metallic objects in shoes, socks, and/or clothing.

An inspection system includes an electromagnetic shield having electrically conductive sidewalls spaced from one another. The shield also includes a conductive third wall which spans the distance between the sidewalls, and is electrically coupled to the sidewalls. Typically, the two current branches are positioned on opposing sides of the medial plane of the electromagnetic shield.

A radio frequency power amplifier including control electronics for providing control signals for timing of the power amplifier. A first group of the drivers are coupled to the control electronics and a second group of drivers are coupled to the control electronics. The first group of drivers operate in response to the control signals to generate first drive signals and the second group of drivers operate in response to the control signals to generate second drive signals with a phase difference of 180&#xb0; relative to the first drive signals. A first group of switches energize a first group of primary windings in response to the first drive signals and a second group of switches energize a second group of primary windings in response to the second drive signals. Power amplifier

An inspection system including a radio frequency (RF) subsystem and a quadrupole resonance (QR) tube array coil. The RF subsystem may include a variable frequency RF source to provide RF excitation signals at a frequency generally corresponding to predetermined, characteristic QR frequencies of a specimen. The QR tube array coil may be implemented using a plurality of conductive tubes defining a cavity of predetermined volume. Typically, the plurality of conductive tubes are spaced at a distance relative to one another to form at least two non-conductive gaps between tubes in the array. After RF excitation signals are applied to the specimen within the cavity, the QR tube array coil may generate a QR output signal responsive to QR signals generated by the specimen.

A device for detecting random objects that are being carried inside a container includes an excitation coil and a sensing coil with a gap therebetween. When the construction of the container includes a conducting loop, the container is positioned on a path between the two coils, with the plane of the loop substantially perpendicular to the path. The excitation coil is then activated to generate a magnetic field that is directed along the path. This magnetic field has both a sinusoidal component and a cosinusoidal component. Importantly, the cosinusoidal component is adjusted to match a characteristic dimension of the loop, to thereby cause zero mutual inductance with the loop in the magnetic field. On the other hand, conducting objects inside the loop will cause inductance perturbations in the magnetic field which can be detected to establish the presence of the objects in the container.

A method for creating an image of in situ biological tissue uses an inhomogeneous field MRI device to pulse the tissue with sequential epochs of excitation pulses. Each epoch of excitation pulses includes, in order, an initial tilting pulse, an x-y encode and a train of refocussing pulses. Specifically, each x-y encode has a K-space identifier of the form i(1 . . . m)+j(1 . . . n), and the tilting pulses change sign according to whether the K-space identifier (i+j) is odd or even. For an image having m.times.n pixels, n.times.n epochs are used to generate n.times.n measurements of imageable spin echo signals. These m.times.n measurements are then collated to create the image.
