The present invention relates to processing of coded aperture images. Multiple frames of data acquired by the coded aperture imaging system, each with a different coded aperture array, are processed to form an image. The processing incorporates the constraints that the image solution must be positive and that the solution should be zero outside an expected image region. In one embodiment image enhancement may involve dividing the processed image into image regions having a spatially invariant point spread function and solving an inverse problem for each image region to reduce image blurring.

Processing methods for coded aperture imaging

This invention relates to a coded aperture imaging system wherein a detector array is arranged to receive radiation from a scene via a coded aperture mask. The coded aperture mask provides a plurality of uncorrelated coded aperture arrays at different positions on the mask. Each distinct coded aperture array therefore passes coded information to the detector array. The intensity pattern at the detector array, which is a summation of the intensity patterns from each of the distinct coded aperture arrays, can be decoded separately for each coded aperture array to reconstruct a separate image associated with each coded aperture array. In this way the present invention teaches a coded aperture array means with multiple, simultaneous fields of view. The different fields of view can be different sizes and/or resolutions. Preferably the coded aperture mask is reconfigurable.

Coded aperture imaging system

In coded aperture imaging knowledge of the coded array pattern and its positional relation to the detector array is needed in order to be able to reconstruct the scene image. Usually a theoretical model of the coded array is used and the actual array needs to be aligned accurately with respect to the detector. The present invention uses a coded aperture imager to image a reference object in the scene and uses the intensity pattern on the detector array to determine the decoding pattern corresponding to the coded aperture array. The reference object may be a point source in which case the pattern on the detector array may be used directly as the decoding pattern or it may be used to correct a theoretical pattern for any misalignment.

A micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems (MOEMS) electro optical modulator () having an electrically tuneable optical resonator comprising an asymmetric Fabry-Perot etalon incorporating a mirror () resiliency biased with respect to a substrate () and moveable in relation thereto in response to a voltage applied there-between. The optical modulator () is capable of modulating electromagnetic radiation having a plurality of wavelengths. The modulator is adapted to modulate the transmission of short wave infrared radiation (SWIR), medium wave infrared radiation (MWIR) and long wave infrared radiation (LWIR) and the reflection of visible radiation. Optical modulator

The present invention relates to an imaging system which employs the same principles as coded aperture imaging. High angular resolution coded aperture imagers require a small aperture size and relatively large spacing between the coded aperture array and the detector. At such high resolutions diffraction effects can start to dominate and can degrade image quality. The present invention provides a detector array which receives radiation from a scene via a coded diffractive mask. The coded diffractive mask is designed such that its diffraction pattern at the waveband of interest is a well conditioned coded intensity pattern having a strong autocorrelation function with low sidelobes. Thus radiation reaching the detector array is diffracted by the diffractive mask but in a defined way and it is the diffraction pattern of the mask which provides the coding. The scene image can then be reconstructed using the same techniques as for conventional coded aperture imaging but using the diffraction pattern of the mask as the aperture function. The coded diffractive mask may be a binary or greyscale mask, may operate in reflection or transmission and may be an amplitude or phase modulating mask.

This invention relates to coded aperture imaging apparatus and methods. In one aspect a coded aperture imager has at least one detector array and a reconfigurable coded aperture mask means. A reconfigurable coded aperture mask means can display various coded aperture masks to provide imaging across different fields of view and/or with different resolution without requiring any moving parts or bulky optical components. More than one detector array can be used to provide large area imaging without requiring seamless tiling and this represents another aspect of the invention. The present invention also relates to the use of coded aperture imaging in the visible, ultraviolet or infrared wavebands. The use of coded aperture imaging for imaging through a curved optical element is taught as the image decoding can automatically remove any aberrations introduced by the curved element.

Coded aperture imaging system having adjustable imaging performance with a reconfigurable coded aperture mask

This invention relates to reconfigurable spatial light modulators (SLM) incorporating a scatter plate. Computer generated diffraction patterns or holograms may be loaded on the (SLM) either as a single frame or as a series of frames for observation by an observer. In a preferred embodiment both an electrically addressable spatial light modulator (EASLM) and an optically addressable spatial light modulator (OASLM) are used. The (OASLM) may be formed of several smaller (OASLMs) arranged in a matrix format. The faster (EASLM) forms a light pattern on the sub-areas of the large (OASLM) in turn to give a large display. The scatter plate is arranged at the output of the (SLM) nearest an observer. This scatter plate has a known characteristic and serves to increase the field of view and/or reduce the number of pixels required to give a holographic or two dimensional displays. Prior to producing a display, the diffraction patterns, holograms, or image in the computer is modified to take account of the properties of the scatter plate; a modified computer generated diffraction pattern, hologram, or image is then displayed to an observer. The system may also be used for optical switching.

Reconfigurable spatial light modulators

A method of generating a Computer Generated Hologram (CGH) using the diffraction specific algorithm allows a curved wavefront to be produced from a single hogel, rather than the planar waves of the prior art. This allows a wavefront from a singel hogel to generate a point in the image volume. An imaginary wavefront is transmitted from each point in the image volume and sampled at a plurality of points over the hogel. These samples are used to produce a set of complex Fourier coefficients that can be used to approximate the original waveform.

A holographic display comprises a light source and an Electrically Addressable Spatial Light Modulator (EASLM) in the path of the light source. A light guide is arranged to guide light from the EASLM to each of a set of tiled regions of a OASLM in turn. The Optically Addressable Spatial Light Modulator (OASLM) has a monostable light modulation property which is changed from a first state to a second state by incident light.
