Architecture that facilitates performance enhancement in message-based computing across a performance-based interface. When a request from a source is transmitted across the interface to a destination, a filter component in communication with the destination dynamically allows only one or more relevant responses from the destination to transition the interface to the source. This mechanism achieves an even tighter filtering of events while at the same time giving developers more flexibility over the events they choose to register, thereby enhancing the performance of message-based computing architectures by reducing unnecessary computation.

This disclosure relates to drawing within a computer environment using a drawing resource. The computer environment includes a managed code portion and a native code portion. The computer environment compares a draw parameter call value being passed from the managed code portion to the native code portion with a stored drawing resource value stored in the native code portion. If the draw parameter call value is the same as the stored drawing resource value, then the computer environment is configured to draw onto a native drawing surface using the stored drawing resource. If the draw parameter call value is not the same as the drawing resource value, then a new drawing resource is created in the managed code portion. In another aspect, a portion of the drawing resource feature portion that contains data that describes at least one or more parameter of the drawing resource is transmitted between the managed code portion and the native code portion.

Techniques for management of drawing resources are described. In an implementation, a reference count numeral may be associated with a drawing resource stored in cache memory. One may be added to the reference count numeral each time a new drawing resource is added to memory. In addition, one may be removed from the reference count each time an existing drawing resource is removed from the memory. Also, the drawing resource may be maintained in the cache memory when the reference count numeral is greater than zero.

An information appliance receives streaming information. The information appliance includes a storage buffer and a writer module which receives the streaming information and writes the streaming information to the buffer. A plurality of reader modules are configurable to read the streaming information from the buffer independently of one another.

Notifications are generated in managed and native environments and propagated to an interfacing abstraction layer of native code there between. The abstraction layer assesses each received notification to determine whether the notification, or a previously received collection thereof, should be transitioned across a boundary between the managed environment and the native environment. The managed environment includes a virtual machine in a managed code portion. The native environment includes an operating system that interfaces the abstraction layer which is at a boundary between the managed code portion and the operating system. A collection of notifications are those that have been batched and/or synthesized. The abstraction layer is configured with predetermined criteria to assess whether to form a collection of received notifications and/or to prevent a transition of a notification, or collection thereof, across the boundary.

One aspect of the present invention leads to a method of handling streaming information. The method includes receiving the streaming information and analyzing the streaming information to locate one or more points of interest in the streaming information. An index of the one or more points of interest are generated. The index is delivered to a user separate from the streaming information. Rendering of the streaming information is controlled based on the points of interest.

One aspect relates to a process and associated apparatus that implements a user interface (UI) control within a computer environment. The computer environment includes a managed code portion and a native code portion. The implementing the UI control includes creating a plurality of control node data structures within the managed code portion. A managed UI control is virtualized within the managed code portion by associating and/or batching at least two of the control node data structures. The UI control is realized in the native code portion by migrating the managed UI control into the native code portion. In certain aspects, the UI control is populated and parented prior to the realizing.

One aspect of the present invention relates to an information appliance for handling streaming information for storage in a circular buffer having a plurality of partitions defined by boundaries. At least one data block is written to the circular buffer to partially fill a partition and at least one padding block is generated having a field indicative of non-streaming information and having a size being a function of remaining space in the partition. A method is provided for handling streaming information encoded with a data structure having a data block format. The data block format includes a data block having a header portion and an end portion. The header portion includes a prefix field having a pointer to a succeeding data block and the end portion includes a suffix field having a pointer to a preceding data block. A first data block size field is included in the header portion and indicates the size of the data block and a second data block size field is included in the end portion and indicates the size of the data block. A payload field is bounded by the first data block size field and a second data block size field. The payload field includes streaming information to be rendered.

An information appliance receives streaming information and includes a buffer, a writer module, a reader module and a synchronizer. The buffer has a plurality of storage locations, a logical head, a logical tail and a valid data area between the logical head and the logical tail. The logical head and the logical tail move sequentially through the plurality of storage locations in a first logical direction. The writer module has a write position at the logical head of the buffer. The writer module receives the streaming information and writes the streaming information to the buffer at the write position. The reader module is coupled to the buffer and has a first read position which is temporally movable with respect to the write position. The synchronizer is coupled to the writer module and the reader module and maintains the first read position within the valid data area.
