A migration replication relationship for data migration between a migration-source volume on a first storage controller and a migration-target volume on a second storage controller, a volume represents a virtualized device. The method presents the migration-source volume and the migration-target volume as a same volume to a host whilst using differentiated target port descriptors to define different discoverable paths to the each. During data migration, the method allows input/output operations to the migration-source volume by presenting target ports of the first storage controller in an available state and deters input/output operations to the migration-target volume by presenting target ports on the second storage controller in a standby state whilst allowing host discovery of paths to the migration-target volume. Once the data migration is complete, the method switches target port states to allow input/output operations to the migration-target volume and to deter input/output operations to the migration-source volume.

Non-disruptive storage volume migration between storage controllers

A storage area network comprises: one or more replicating source and target storage volumes accessible by one or more hosts; a volume replication status checker for determining an active replication relationship between a source storage volume and a target storage volume; and a volume visibility engine for setting the target storage volume to be hidden from a host if the target storage volume is visible to the host and has a determined active relationship. The volume replication status checker is further for determining an inactive replication relationship between a source storage volume and a target storage volume; and the volume visibility engine is further for setting the target storage volume to be visible to a host if the target storage volume is hidden from the host and has a determined inactive replication relationship.

Managing disaster recovery replication for storage volumes

Executing connections from a data processing system to a storage controller using ports specified in a TPG report. The storage controller receives a RTPG SCSI request from the data processing system via a FC fabric. The storage controller determines whether NPIV is enabled on the storage controller and, if so, the storage controller modifies the TPG report to include one or more dedicated N-Ports and one or more multi-purpose N-Ports, where AAS bits of a dedicated N-Port descriptor associated with the dedicated N-Ports are set as Active/optimized. The storage controller sends the modified TPG report to the data processing system. The storage controller then processes an access request received from the data processing system where the access request is received on one of the one or more dedicated N-Ports and the one or more multi-purpose N-Ports according to the TPG report and a device type of the data processing system.
