The invention provides a fuel cell metallic separator, wherein the metallic plate's edges include a resin portion comprising the communication ports. The resin portion around the communication ports is shaped so as to be capable of interlocking with a fuel cell stack component adjacently located in a fuel cell system. The invention also provides a resin portion capable of press fitting or thermal bonding with adjacent a fuel cell stack components.

Apparatus, systems, and methods for bonding one element of an electrochemical cell or cell stack to another wherein a sealing grove with a complex cross-sectional shape receives and retains a bead of adhesive prior to being assembled. The complex cross-sectional shape has a raised portion sized to receive and retain the bead of adhesive, and at least one depressed portion to receive adhesive displaced from the raised portion during assembly. Embodiments of the invention incorporate raised portions with straight, beveled, curved, and rough surfaces to increase the strength of the bond between the respective elements.

Systems, apparatus and methods for bonding and/or sealing electrochemical cell elements and assemblies

An elastomer may be used to construct a separate, moldable part that engages the edge a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) to thereby seal the MEA. The seal has a groove defining two sealing portions separated by a web portion. The groove of the seal then engages the edge of the MEA and can maintain a tight fit without the need for additional adhesives. Additional features may extend laterally from the web portion to assist in separating cathode and anode plates and/or encompass, for example, manifold openings.
