A head () for a suction cleaner is described. The head () including: a lower housing portion (); an upper housing portion (); and a rotatably mounted brush bar () mounted within the housing portions (). The upper housing portion () is pivotable relative to the lower housing portion () between a closed position for use and an open position in which the brush bar () is exposed from above and the front.

A dust separating and collecting apparatus for a suction cleaner comprising at least one cyclonic separating device () having a body () through which a stream of air with dust therein can be caused to flow by a suction unit from an air inlet () to an air outlet () of the device, said inlet and outlet being at or adjacent one end of the body and said separating device further having a lateral outlet () at or adjacent the other end of the body for dust separated from the airstream in the course of its passage through the separator; and a receptacle () for the separated dust, the receptacle being movably disposed alongside said separating device () and having an inlet () for separated dust communicating with the dust outlet () of the separating device. Preferably there are two cyclonic separating devices () and the receptacle () lies generally between them.

A vacuum cleaner includes a removable filter element and an indicator member having a first position when the filter member is removed from the cleaner and a second position when the filter member is in place in the cleaner and being readily visible to a user of the vacuum cleaner in at least one of the first and second positions. When the indicator member is in the first position, the vacuum cleaner cannot be used to collect dust and dirt.
