Embodiments of the present invention include a medical probe having a flexible insertion tube, a basket assembly, and a plurality of electrodes. The basket assembly has a proximal end that is connected distally to the insertion tube and includes a plurality of resilient spines, which have respective outer sides and inner sides and are configured to bow radially outward from an axis of the basket assembly and are conjoined at the proximal end and at a distal end of the basket assembly. The plurality of electrodes are fixed to respective ones of the spines in respective longitudinal positions that are staggered on any given spine relative to the longitudinal positions of the electrodes on the spines adjacent to the given spine, and which include a conductive material that is biased towards the respective outer sides of the spines.

A phacoemulsification device includes a phacoemulsification probe and a processor. The phacoemulsification probe includes a piezoelectric crystal configured to vibrate in response to a drive signal, a needle configured to be inserted into a lens capsule of an eye and to be vibrated by the piezoelectric crystal, and a set of magnetic-field components. The set includes (i) one or more magnetic-field generators configured to generate a magnetic field, and (ii) one or more magnetic-field sensors configured to sense the magnetic field. At least one of the magnetic-field components is coupled to vibrate with the needle and at least one other of the magnetic-field components is isolated from vibration of the needle, thereby causing the magnetic-field sensors to output signals indicative of the vibration. The processor is configured to adaptively adjust a frequency of the drive signal so as to vibrate the needle at a resonant frequency of the piezoelectric crystal.

An example expandable basket assembly for a medical probe may include a plurality of spines extending along a longitudinal axis from a proximal central proximal spine portion to a distal spine portion. The distal spine portion may define a cloverleaf structure disposed radially around the longitudinal axis. The cloverleaf structure may define a central cutout with a central area disposed about the longitudinal axis. The cloverleaf structure may include a sinusoidal-like member extending from one spine to an adjacent spine in a direction around the longitudinal axis. The sinusoidal-like member may include a plurality of distal facing portions, a plurality of proximal facing portions, and at least one side connector connecting two adjacent distal facing portions to one another. The at least one side connector may strengthen a distal end of the expandable basket.

A catheter tip may be a fabricated as a planar flexible circuit, e.g., via lithography, as having a first planar segment and a second planar segment that includes various electrodes on different sectors that are insulated from each other. The tip may be deformed to have a non-planar configuration, e.g., cylindrical, and then assembled onto a catheter. The catheter may be used to monitor ECG signals and temperature and to precisely deliver ablative energy to tissues via the various electrodes. ECG signals and temperature may be monitored for one sector while ablation energy is being delivered to another sector.

An eye surgery system includes an Input/Output (I/O) device and a processor. The I/O device is configured to enable a user to define one or more eye surgery protocols, and further configured to, using the I/O device, present a graphical user interface (GUI) that displays one or more user defined eye surgery protocols. The processor is configured to (a) present the one or more user defined eye surgery protocols on the I/O device using the GUI, (b) test compatibility of the one or more user defined eye surgery protocols with the eye surgery system, and (c) provide an indication of the compatibility to a user of the eye surgery system.

A system for use with multiple electrodes coupled to respective spines of a probe includes multiple switches connected to the electrodes and configured to short different respective first subsets of the electrodes to each other and different respective second subsets of the electrodes to each other per different respective settings of the switches. The system further includes a processor configured to control the switches so as to alternate through the settings and, for each of the settings, cause a power generator to apply a voltage between the shorted first subset and the shorted second subset while the probe is deployed within a body of a subject. A system and method that includes inserting a needle of a phacoemulsification handpiece into an eye of a patient and vibrating the needle in a first trajectory. Matter from the eye is aspirated via an aspiration line while the needle is vibrated in the first trajectory. An indication is received, of a vacuum level in the aspiration line. Determined is, that the vacuum level has changed by at least a preset vacuum level change, and in response vibrating the needle is switched to a second trajectory, different from the first trajectory.

The shaft assembly extends distally from the body and includes a rigid proximal portion and a steerable distal portion. The first actuator is operable to drive the steerable distal portion to deflect laterally relative to a longitudinal axis defined by the rigid proximal portion. The second actuator is operable to drive longitudinal translation of the visualization assembly relative to the shaft assembly.

A balloon catheter that has one or more ultrasonic transducers to map a body cavity and to measure thicknesses of walls in the body cavity during an ablation procedure. The balloon of the catheter is deployable through a lumen into the body cavity with a flexible printed circuit board that has a first side attached to the exterior wall of the inflatable balloon and a second side opposite the first side. There is also provided an ultrasonic transducer mounted on the first side of the flexible printed circuit board and encapsulated between the exterior wall of the balloon and the flexible printed circuit board. A method of making or using the balloon catheter is also provided.

A system includes an indifferent electrode, electrical switching circuitry, and a processor. The indifferent electrode, which is configured for placement on a body of a patient, includes multiple electrically-conducting sub-electrodes that are electrically-insulated from one another. The electrical switching circuitry is configured to receive a control signal that specifies a selected subset of the sub-electrodes, and in response to electrically connect the selected subset, so as to close an electrical circuit passing through the body of the patient. The processor is configured to determine a required surface area of the indifferent electrode, select the subset of the sub-electrodes that together have the required surface area, and instruct the electrical switching circuitry to electrically connect the selected subset of the sub-electrodes.

A flexible probe has an assembly in its distal end that includes a compressible spring, the compressible spring arranged in a helix having flat surfaces with at least one leg at each end of the spring. The compressible spring is configured to deform in response to a compressive force acting against the legs at the ends of the spring from pressure exerted on the distal tip when engaging a wall of the body cavity. The compressible spring further includes at least one flexible transmitter coil disposed on the flat surface at one end of the spring and at least one flexible receiver coil on the flat surface at the other end of the spring. The at least one of flexible receiver coil is configured to receive signals from the at least one flexible transmitter coil for sensing a position of the coils relative to each other.
