A jaw member of a surgical instrument includes a structural frame, an insulative spacer supported on the structural frame, an electrically conductive tissue contacting plate supported on the insulative spacer, and a lead wire. The spacer defines a pocket at an upper portion thereof and includes a channel extending from the pocket, through the spacer, to a bottom portion of the spacer. The channel defines a substantially U-shaped configuration having first and second radiused corners at the bottom portion of the spacer. The lead wire is attached to an underside of the plate at an attachment point within the pocket and extends distally from the attachment point into the channel, through the channel, over the first and second radiused corners, and proximally from the jaw member. The lead wire is adapted to connect to a source of energy to energize the plate for treating tissue.

Jaw member, end effector assembly, and method of manufacturing a jaw member of an electrosurgical instrument

A robotic surgical instrument includes a housing having a shaft extending therefrom configured to receive a first end effector including jaw members moveable between a fully open position wherein the jaw members are spaced a maximum distance relative to one another and a closed position wherein a closure pressure between the jaw members is within a predetermined range. A drive rod actuates the first end effector upon translation thereof. The housing includes a spring compression assembly having proximal and distal hubs with the compression spring disposed therebetween. A jaw drive input rotates a drive gear to translate the distal hub relative to the proximal hub to compress the compression spring and actuate the end effector. Once the jaw members are fully open, the jaw drive input rotates a preset number of degrees to compress the compression spring and approximate the jaw members to a closure pressure within the predetermined range.

An articulating electrosurgical instrument includes a housing having an elongated shaft extending therefrom and a wrist assembly operably supported to a distal end of the elongated shaft and configured to support an end effector assembly at distal end thereof. The wrist assembly includes a proximal link operably coupled to the distal end of the elongated shaft, a distal link operably coupled to the end effector assembly, and a central link operably coupled between the proximal link and the distal link. A transition lumen is configured to be received within the distal link, central link and proximal link. The transition lumen includes a helical passageway defined therein configured to guide a blade rod therethrough for operable engagement with a blade disposed within the end effector assembly.

A surgical system includes at least one input coupler configured to receive an input, an end effector assembly, and an actuation assembly operably coupled between the at least one input coupler and the end effector assembly such that, in response receipt of the input by the at least one input coupler, the end effector assembly is manipulated. The system further includes a storage device storing setting information and adjustment information. The setting information enables determination of a first input to the at least one input coupler to achieve a desired manipulation of the end effector assembly. The adjustment information enables adjustment of the setting information for determination of a second input, different from the first input, to the at least one input coupler to achieve the desired manipulation of the end effector assembly.

A method for sealing a vessel includes supplying electrical energy to an ultrasonic surgical instrument having an end effector and a transducer coupled to the end effector, when the end effector is grasping a vessel, sensing parameters of the vessel when the end effector achieves a predetermined velocity, estimating a size of the vessel based on the sensed parameters, controlling the electrical energy based on maintaining a predetermined initial heating rate of heating the vessel until a predetermined amount of energy corresponding to the estimated size of the vessel has been delivered, and controlling the electrical energy based on a predetermined heating rate curve of heating the vessel after the predetermined amount of energy corresponding to the estimated size of the vessel has been delivered.

Methods and ultrasonic devices and systems for vessel sealing

A surgical instrument includes a housing, an end effector including a clamp jaw, a drive member extending distally from the housing, and a clamp lever pivotably coupled to the housing. The drive member is operably coupled to the clamp jaw such that translation of the drive member pivots the clamp jaw from an open position towards a clamping position. The clamp lever is operably coupled to the drive member via a rigid slider. The clamp jaw is configured to provide a jaw force to clamped tissue, measured at about 0.192 inches from a distal end of the clamp jaw, of from about 1 lbf to about 8 lbf in response to a full actuation of the clamp lever.
