An optical article includes a waveguide and a structured film. The structured film includes a polymeric substrate, an etch stop layer disposed on the polymeric substrate, a structured layer including a plurality of engineered structures disposed on a side of the etch stop layer opposite the polymeric substrate, a planarizing backfill layer disposed over the plurality of engineered structures to define a substantially planar major surface of the planarizing backfill layer having a surface roughness Ra, and an adhesive layer disposed on the substantially planar surface of the planarizing backfill layer and bonding the structured film to the waveguide. Structured film and optical article including structured film

The present disclosure provides an article including a layer having a nanostructured first surface including nanofeatures and an opposing second surface, and an inorganic layer including a major surface bonded to a portion of the nanostructured first surface. The nanostructured first surface includes protruding features that are formed of a single composition and/or recessed features. The article includes at least one enclosed void defined in part by the nanostructured first surface. The present disclosure also provides a method of making the article including treating a major surface of an inorganic layer with a coupling agent, contacting a nanostructured surface of a layer with the treated inorganic layer, and securing the two layers together via a bonded coupling agent by bonding at least one of the nanostructured surface or the treated inorganic layer. In addition, the present disclosure provides an optical element including the article. The nanostructured surface of the article is protected from damage and contamination by the inorganic layer.

Articles including nanostructured surfaces and enclosed voids, methods of making same, and optical elements

Fluorinated photoinitiators and polymerizable compositions including such fluorinated photoinitiators and at least one free-radically polymerizable monomer, oligomer, or mixture thereof. Multilayer films including a substrate and at least a first layer overlaying a surface of the substrate also are described, in which the at least first layer includes a (co)polymer obtained by polymerizing the foregoing polymerizable compositions. Processes for making a multilayer film using the polymerizable composition also are taught. Articles including the multilayer film also are disclosed, in which the article preferably is selected from a photovoltaic device, a display device, a solid-state lighting device, a sensor, a medical or biological diagnostic device, an electrochromic device, light control device, or a combination thereof.

Fluorinated photoinitiators and fluorinated (co)polymer layers made using the same

A packaged abrasive article comprises an abrasive article hermetically sealed within a bag. The abrasive article comprises abrasive particles at least partially retained in a phenolic binder. The bag comprises a multilayer barrier film that comprises: a first substrate layer; a first polymerized acrylic layer disposed on the first substrate layer; an aluminosilicate layer disposed on the first polymerized acrylic layer; and a second polymerized acrylic layer disposed on the aluminosilicate layer.

Packaged abrasive articles

Nanostructured articles, materials for the nanostructured articles, and intermediate articles for use in making the nanostructured articles. The nanostructured articles can be formed on a flexible film and are useful for optical metasurface applications and possibly other applications. The articles can include nanoreplicated layers or pattern transfer layers of engineered nanostructures.

Materials and methods for forming nano-structures on substrates

Compound are described comprising a perfluorinated group bonded to at least one terminal photoinitiator group with an organic linking group comprising at least one amide moiety. The compound typically comprises the (e.g. Michael addition) reaction product of i) a compound comprising an acryl group and a photoinitiator group; and ii) an amino functional perfluorinated compound. Also described is a composition comprising at least one free-radically polymerizable (e.g. fluorinated) monomer, oligomer, or combination thereof; and the described fluorinated photoinitiator compound and methods.

Compounds comprising perfluorinated group, photoinitiator group, and amide linking group

Barrier films including a (co)polymeric substrate, at least one dyad on the substrate, each dyad made of a (co)polymer layer and an oxide layer overlaying the (co)polymer layer, and an outer (co)polymer layer overlaying the dyads. Optionally, at least one outer oxide layer overlays the outer (co)polymer layer. The barrier films transmit visible light and transmits, at an incident light angle of at least one of 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, or 75°, at most 70 percent of incident ultraviolet light at a wavelength range from at least 100 nanometers to 400 nanometers or in a wavelength range from at least 100 nm to 350 nm. The barrier films exhibit atomic oxygen degradation of less than 1×10mg/atom. The barrier films may be applied to decorative objects or electronic devices, (e.g., light receiving or emitting devices, in a satellite or aircraft. Methods of making the barrier films also are disclosed.

Ultraviolet radiation and atomic oxygen barrier films and methods of making and using the same

A composite article includes a multilayer barrier assembly bonded to a substrate, and a top polymer layer bonded to the multilayer barrier assembly opposite the substrate. The multilayer barrier assembly comprises a base polymer layer and a base inorganic barrier layer. The base polymer layer comprises a polymerized reaction product of polymerizable components comprising at least one di(meth)acrylate represented by the formula Each Rindependently represents H or methyl; each Rindependently represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; x=0, 1, 2, 3, or 4; and z=0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, with the provisos that at least one of x and z is not zero and 1&#x2264;x+z&#x2264;4. Methods of making the same are also disclosed.

Composite article including a multilayer barrier assembly and methods of making the same

A composite article includes a multilayer barrier assembly bonded to a substrate, and a top polymer layer bonded to the multilayer barrier assembly opposite the substrate. The multilayer barrier assembly comprises a base polymer layer and a base inorganic barrier layer. The base polymer layer comprises a polymerized reaction product of polymerizable components comprising at least one di(meth)acrylate represented by the formula: Formula (I) Each Rindependently represents H or methyl; each Rindependently represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; x=0, 1, 2, 3, or 4; and z=0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, with the provisos that at least one of x and z is not zero and 1&#x2264;x+z&#x2264;4. Methods of making the same are also disclosed. 

There is provided a method of making a curved barrier film, including: depositing a barrier layer between a first organic layer and a second organic layer to form a barrier film; and thermoforming or vacuum-forming the barrier film from a flat barrier film to a curved barrier film; wherein the barrier film includes the barrier layer having two opposing major surfaces, wherein the barrier layer includes buckling deformations and non-buckling regions; the first organic layer in direct contact with one of the opposing major surfaces of the barrier layer; and the second organic layer in direct contact with the other of the opposing major surfaces of the barrier layer.

Methods of making extensible barrier films

Urea (multi)-(meth)acrylate (multi)-silane precursor compounds, synthesized by reaction of (meth)acrylated materials having isocyanate functionality with aminosilane compounds, either neat or in a solvent, and optionally with a catalyst, such as a tin compound, to accelerate the reaction. Also described are articles including a substrate, a base (co)polymer layer on a major surface of the substrate, an oxide layer on the base (co)polymer layer; and a protective (co)polymer layer on the oxide layer, the protective (co)polymer layer including the reaction product of at least one urea (multi)-(meth)acrylate (multi)-silane precursor compound synthesized by reaction of (meth)acrylated materials having isocyanate functionality with aminosilane compounds. The substrate may be a (co)polymer film or an electronic device such as an organic light emitting device, electrophoretic light emitting device, liquid crystal display, thin film transistor, or combination thereof. Methods of making the urea (multi)-(meth)acrylate (multi)-silanes and their use in composite films and electronic devices are described.

Compositions of matter described as urea (multi)-urethane (meth)acrylate-silanes having the general formula R&#x2014;NH&#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;N(R)&#x2014;R&#x2014;[O&#x2014;C(O)NH&#x2014;R], or R&#x2014;NH&#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;N(R)&#x2014;R&#x2014;[O&#x2014;C(O)NH&#x2014;R]. Also described are articles including a substrate, a base (co)polymer layer on a major surface of the substrate, an oxide layer on the base (co)polymer layer; and a protective (co)polymer layer on the oxide layer, the protective (co)polymer layer including the reaction product of at least one urea (multi)-urethane (meth)acrylate-silane precursor compound. The substrate may be a (co)polymer film or an electronic device such as an organic light emitting device, electrophoretic light emitting device, liquid crystal display, thin film transistor, or combination thereof. Methods of making such urea (multi)-urethane (meth)acrylate-silane precursor compounds, and their use in composite films and electronic devices are also described. Methods of using multilayer composite films as barrier films in articles selected from solid state lighting devices, display devices, and photovoltaic devices are also described.
