Phased array antenna using series-fed sub-arrays

Techniques are described for detecting whether a phased array antenna is to be calibrated. In an example, a controller communicatively coupled with the phased array antenna measures a characteristic of a probe signal. The probe signal is communicated between an antenna element of the phased array antenna and a probe antenna mounted to the phased array antenna. The probe antenna is over-resonant. The controller further determines a drift of the phased array antenna based at least in part on the characteristic. Based at least in part on the drift, the controller initiates a calibration of the phased array antenna.

Technologies directed to arranging antenna elements in a triangular pattern on an antenna module of a phased array antenna are described. The phased array antenna includes a support structure and a first antenna module coupled to the support structure. The first antenna module element has a rectangular shape and includes a first set of antenna elements arranged as a first row and a second row within the rectangular shape. An antenna element of the first row and two antenna elements of the second row form a triangular pattern. Two adjacent antenna elements of the first set of antenna elements are separated by a first distance. Each antenna element of the first set of antenna elements has a first size that is less than half of the first distance.

The antenna structure includes a first circuit board, a second circuit board, and a structure. The first circuit board includes a first set of antenna elements. Testing apparatuses, and methods for using such apparatuses to calibrate and test an antenna, include a chamber that includes a lining, the lining being made from a material that is absorptive to radiation at a test wavelength. An adjustable platform is positioned at a first side of the chamber, the adjustable platform being rotatable to change an orientation of a device under test. A probe is positioned at a second side of the chamber, opposite to the first side of the chamber, that measures electromagnetic radiation from the device under test. A vector network analyzer communicates with the device under test and the probe to determine calibration information for the device under test.
