A gas operating system for automatic cycling of a pistol-caliber firearm is disclosed. The disclosed system may be configured to utilize gas produced by combustion of pistol cartridge propellant to automatically cycle the firearm. To that end, the disclosed system may include a gas block which routes high-pressure gas from the barrel through a gas port to a piston. The location of the gas port may be selected to lie within a region of the barrel which generally corresponds with the peak of the pressure curve associated with a given pistol cartridge. The high-pressure gas may impinge on the piston head, forcing the piston rearward and into physical contact with a short-stroke operating rod affixed to the bolt carrier of the host firearm. Consequently, the bolt carrier may be driven rearward, allowing for cycling of the firearm to progress.

A sear trip bar for use in an automatic firearm is disclosed. In accordance with some embodiments, the sear trip bar can be operatively interfaced with the bolt carrier and the automatic sear of the host firearm. The disclosed sear trip bar can be configured such that, upon sufficient displacement thereof (e.g., exhaustion of its stroke length) by the bolt carrier, the automatic sear may be caused to trip. Thus, the disclosed sear trip bar can be utilized, for example, to transfer the force of the moving bolt carrier during a given firing cycle to automatically trip the sear so as to initiate one or more subsequent firing cycles without having to release and again operate the trigger of the host firearm. The disclosed sear trip bar can be utilized, for example, in pistol-caliber and/or rifle-caliber automatic firearms.

A handguard system for connecting an accessory to a firearm has a tubular body having a bore size to closely receive the body of the barrel nut. The tubular body has a tapered wedge portion that defines a gap therein. There may be a tapered clamp element adapted to fit over the wedge. The clamp element may be operable to squeeze the gap as the clamp element is pushed onto the wedge. The squeezing of the gap is operable to clamp the tubular body to the body of the barrel nut. The tubular body and the body of the barrel nut may each include a mating feature that prevents longitudinal movement of the tubular body while the mating features are engaged. The tubular body and the upper receiver may each include a mating feature that prevents rotational movement of the tubular body while the mating features are engaged.
