A water sorption device includes a catalytic combustor configured to, in a desorption state, combust a hydrocarbon fuel mixture to generate heat; a thermoelectric generator configured to, in the desorption state, generate electricity from a first portion of the heat from the catalytic combustor; and an adsorber configured to in an adsorption state, adsorb water from ambient air from an environment and in the desorption state, desorb the adsorbed water as vapor using a second portion of the heat from the catalytic combustor.

A mask seal test method, device, and system of using the same are described herein. One method for testing a mask seal can include blocking a respirator cartridge to create pressure within a mask, wherein the mask includes a pressure sensor, measuring pressure values within the mask using the pressure sensor, and notifying a user in response to an increased pressure decay value among the pressure values received by the mask identification reader.

Embodiments relate generally to systems and methods for determining the temperature of an object or surface near a user, such as a firefighter, in potentially dangerous conditions. A temperature sensor configured to be attached to a personal protection equipment may comprise a standoff temperature sensor element configured to detect the temperature of a nearby object or surface; a microcontroller configured to receive sensor data from the standoff temperature sensor element and determine the sensed temperature; an indicator configured to be activated by the microcontroller when the sensed temperature is higher than a predefined threshold; and an attachment element configured to attach the sensor to a personal protection equipment worn by a user.

Apparatus and associated methods relate to a distance-learning safety retraction device (DLSRD) mechanically coupled to a fixed anchor point on a boundary-mapped surface, the DLSRD including two receivers in operable communication with a transmitter borne on a user. In an illustrative example, the DLSRD may determine an angle between a lanyard coupled to the user and a vertical plane between the two receivers. The DLSRD may include, for example, an extraction detector detecting an extracted length of the lanyard. The DLSRD may determine user proximity to a safe operating area boundary based upon a difference of a current extracted length of the lanyard to a learned extracted length associated with a current angle of the lanyard, for example. Various DLSRDs may be configured in a run-mode to apply a braking effect to the lanyard and/or to activate a warning device based upon the user's proximity to the boundary.

A flame detector includes a beam splitter to split mid-wave infrared radiation (MWIR) and long-wave infrared radiation (LWIR) into an MWIR component and an LWIR component. An MWIR detector detects the MWIR component and an LWIR detector detects the LWIR component. The flame detector analyzes the MWIR component to determine the presence of a flame and analyzes the LAIR component to determine whether the system is functioning properly.

An apparatus for measuring body core temperature includes a light guide with an internally reflective tube. The light guide is coupled to an earpiece, and has a lens or an aperture positioned at one of its ends. A sensor is positioned at the other end of the light guide, and a processor is coupled to the sensor. The sensor senses infrared radiation from an infrared source at the end of the light guide, and the processor determines a temperature of the infrared source at the end of the light guide via a transfer function that correlates a measure of the infrared radiation observed by the sensor and an effect of radiation of the light guide.

One or more embodiments include a filter comprising a first designated transmittance value for a first wavelength range and a second designated transmittance value for a second wavelength range, a sensor to receive transmitted radiation from the filter, and a computing device coupled to the sensor to detect any radiation within the first and second wavelength ranges from the received transmitted radiation from the filter and wherein the detected radiation in the first wavelength indicates a particular type of radiation source and detected radiation in the second wavelength range indicates one or more other items within a field of view of the received radiation.

Multispectral band system

A device for measuring body core temperature includes a light guide. The light guide is coupled to an earpiece. A first sensor is positioned at a first end of the light guide, and a second sensor is positioned at a second end of the light guide. A processor is coupled to the first sensor and the second sensor. The first sensor senses infrared radiation from an infrared source at the second end of the light guide, and the second sensor measures a temperature of the light guide at the second end of the light guide. The processor determines a temperature of the infrared source at the second end of the light guide by compensating for infrared radiation due to a thermal gradient of the light guide via a regression analysis across a range of ambient temperatures of the light guide.

An apparatus for measuring body core temperature includes a light guide. The light guide can be coupled to an earpiece, or it can be a standalone device. The apparatus also includes a sensor positioned at one end of the light guide, and a processor coupled to the sensor. The sensor is operable to sense infrared radiation from an infrared source at the opposite end of the light guide. The processor is operable to determine a temperature of the infrared source at the opposite end of the light guide via a transfer function that correlates a measurement of the infrared radiation observed by the sensor and an effect of radiation of the light guide.

Embodiments of the disclosure include systems and methods for detection of background and foreground radiances captured by a multispectral imaging device. In some embodiments, a multispectral imaging device may generate a plurality of images of the same field of view, wherein the images may be captured at a variety of wavelengths. These images may be processed to identify any incidents, such as fire and/or gas leaks, within the field of view of the imaging device.
