An electrosurgical device comprising an elongate probe member having proximal and distal extremities and a passage extending from the proximal extremity to an opening at the distal extremity. The elongate probe member is provided with an elongate cutout adjacent the opening so that the elongate probe member is formed with an elongate extension projecting alongside the cutout beyond the opening. A guide canula is mounted in the passage of the elongate probe member and has proximal and distal extremities and a lumen extending therethrough. A radio frequency electrode is disposed in the lumen and an insulating sleeve is coaxially disposed on the radio frequency electrode. A handle is secured to the proximal extremity of the guide canula for advancing and retracting the radio frequency electrode and the insulating sleeve with respect to the guide canula and for causing bending of the distal extremity of the guide cannula into the cutout. The extension of the elongate probe member provides support to the guide cannula against the force of the radio frequency electrode engaging the tissue. A method for using the device is provided.

Electrosurgical device

A transurethral needle ablation device for use by a human hand to treat the prostate of a human male. The device includes a cartridge assembly having an elongate probe member and a stylet. The elongate probe member has proximal and distal extremities and is provided with a passageway extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity. The stylet is slidably mounted in the passageway of the elongate probe member. A housing is included in the device. The cartridge assembly is removably mountable on the housing. An assembly adapted for actuation by the human hand is carried by the housing and coupled to the proximal extremity of the stylet for causing the distal extremity of the stylet to extend into the tissue of the prostate.

A medical probe device for introduction by way of a natural body opening into a tubular internal anatomical part of the body includes an elongate member having proximal and distal extremities and a passageway extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity along a longitudinal axis, a transparent guide piece mounted on the distal extremity of the elongate member, the transparent guide piece having proximal and distal extremities and a bore therein defining a guide piece lumen extending from the proximal extremity of the guide piece distally at least part way to the distal extremity of the guide piece, the guide piece lumen being in communication with the passageway in the elongate member, an optical viewing element movable within the passageway of the elongate member and having a distal extremity movable within the guide piece lumen, a handle mechanism mounted on the proximal extremity of the elongate member, and a further mechanism carried by the handle for mounting the distal extremity of the optical viewing element within the guide piece lumen and for moving the distal extremity of the optical viewing element in a longitudinal direction within the guide piece lumen between a distal position to permit viewing forward of the distal extremity of the guide piece within the body and a proximal position to permit viewing lateral to at least the distal extremity of the guide piece.

An electrosurgical device for medical treatment of tissue at a treatment site through a body opening. The device includes a sheath having proximal and distal extremities and having a passageway extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity. A guide tube is slidably mounted in the passageway of the sheath and has proximal and distal extremities and a lumen extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity. A needle electrode is slidably mounted in the lumen of the guide tube and has proximal and distal extremities. Insulation is coaxially disposed on the needle electrode. A handle adapted to be gripped by the human hand is provided and the proximal extremity of the guide tube is mounted on the handle. An assembly is carried by the handle for bending the distal extremity of the guide tube at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis. The needle electrode is adapted to be coupled to an energy source. A single actuation element is carried by the handle and coupled to the needle electrode and the insulation. The actuation element is movable in a single stroke from a first position in which the needle electrode and the insulation are disposed within the guide tube and a second position in which the needle electrode and the insulation are disposed in the tissue at the treatment site. A method for using the device is provided.

A transurethral needle ablation device for use with the human hand for radio frequency ablation of a target volume in the tissue of a prostate of a human male having a bladder with a base and a penis with a urethra therein formed by a urethral wall extending into the base of the bladder along a longitudinal axis with the tissue of the prostate surrounding the urethra near the base of the bladder. The device comprises a bridge having proximal and distal extremities and having a passage therein extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity. A sheath having proximal and distal extremities is secured to the bridge and has a passageway therein in communication with the passage in the bridge. The sheath is sized so that it can enter the urethra and has a length so that when its distal extremity is in the vicinity of the prostate, the proximal extremity is outside the urethra. A disposable needle assembly having proximal and distal extremities is removably mounted in the passage in the bridge and extends through the passageway in the sheath. The needle assembly includes at least one needle electrode and an insulating sleeve coaxially disposed on the needle electrode. The proximal extremity of the needle assembly is caused to be moved sideways at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis to face the urethral wall. A mechanism is carried by the proximal extremity of the needle assembly and the bridge for causing advancement of the needle electrode and the insulation sleeve thereon through the urethral wall and into the target volume in the tissue of the prostate with a portion of the electrode being free of the insulation but with the insulation extending through the urethral wall.

An inventive surgical handpiece comprises a handle unit and structure carried by the handle unit for engaging a patient. A hand actuable element is mounted for rotation on the handle unit, about first and second mutually transverse axes. A first mechanism is responsive to rotation of the hand actuable element about its first axis for imparting first degree of freedom movement to the patient engaging structure. A second mechanism is responsive to rotation of the same hand actuable element about its second axis for imparting second degree of freedom movement to the patient engaging structure.

A surgical irrigation system is suitable for endoscopic and other surgical procedures. A hand held handpiece has a forward protruding hollow tip for supplying irrigation liquid to a surgical site, a hand actuable control for controlling irrigation liquid flow to the tip, and an irrigation liquid inlet. A self contained pumping unit is locatable adjacent a source of irrigation liquid and remote from the handpiece. The pumping unit comprises a housing containing an outlet for irrigation liquid, a pumping member for pumping irrigation liquid through the outlet, a motor for driving the pumping member, and an electric battery assembly for energizing the motor. An elongate tube connects the pumping outlet to the handpiece irrigation liquid inlet for supplying pumped irrigation liquid to the handpiece.
