The present invention is directed to a multiple component coating composition comprising (a) a film forming binder component having isocyanate reactive groups; (b) a stable polyisocyanate solution comprising organic liquid and up to 30% by weight, based on the weight of the polyisocyanate solution, of a polyisocyanate having reactive isocyanate groups selected from an aromatic polyisocyanate having tertiary isocyanate groups or a (meth)acrylic polymer containing reactive isocyanate groups; and (c) optionally, a tinting composition comprising pigment, a dispersing agent and an organic liquid carrier; whereby components (a), (b) and (c) are blended together before application to a substrate and after application to a substrate the composition is cured to form a finish. The present invention is also directed to a method of producing a finish on a substrate and to the resulting coated substrate.

Microgels and process for their preparation

The present invention is directed to a process for forming star shaped microgels which include a core of crosslinked polymer and multiplicity of substantially linear polymeric arms of macromonomers attached to the core. The process includes polymerizing monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of a chain transfer agent to form macromonomers each having a terminal polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated group and then polymerizing, in presence of the macromonomers, the monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and multi-olefinic crosslinking monomers. The microgels of the present invention can be used as rheology control agents in waterborne and solvent-borne coatings and in adhesives and cosmetics.

Process for preparing star shaped microgels from macromonomers with terminal ethylenic unsaturation

This invention provides for a two-pack solvent based coating composition that cures in two stages when applied over substrates. The first stage of the cure takes place rapidly under ambient conditions to produce a coating surface that can be readily sanded or buffed. Thereafter, over a period of days a second stage cure takes place to produce a coating having excellent coating properties. Thus, a coated component, such as automotive body, can be speedily moved out from a spray booth without affecting the surface quality of the coated surface. As a result, coating operation productivity can be increased. The aforedescribed dual cure properties of the coating composition result from including in a binder component of the coating composition an acrylic polymer having secondary amine and hydroxyl functionalities. The composition is most suited for use in automotive refinish applications.

Two-stage cure coating compositions

A process for forming a microgel which comprises a crosslinked core and a multiplicity of linear polymeric arms attached to the core, wherein the process comprises (a) first forming a halogen atom terminated prepolymer with a weight average molecular weight from 1,000 to 25,000 by polymerizing monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of an organic sulfonyl halide, an organic complexing agent and a transition metal (i.e., Cu, Ru, Ni, Re, Pd, Fe, or Rh); and (b) subsequently polymerizing the prepolymer with a mixture of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and 0.5 to 60 mole percent, based on the total moles of monomer and prepolymer, of multi-olefinic polymerizable monomers to form a microgel with a weight average molecular weight of 10,000 to 100,000,000 and crosslinked core.

A process for preparing microgel(s) that uses a wide range of activatable prepolymers; in the process, a polymer composition of crosslinked component A and soluble components B and C is formed from mono-olefinic and multi-olefinic monomers in the presence of catalyst and initiator; the process comprises: I) introducing mono-olefinic monomer, catalyst, and initiator into a reactor in the absence of multi-olefinic monomer and producing an activatable prepolymer, component B; II) contacting the product of I) with multi-olefinic monomer to produce components A and C, optionally in the presence of additional initiator; also optionally in the presence of additional mono-olefinic monomer and initiator; the ratio of components A/(B&plus;C) can be controlled by varying the mole ratio of Component B/ multi-olefinic monomer from 0.05/1 up to 5/1, by decreasing the mole ratio to increase the ratio of A/(B&plus;C), and increasing the mole ratio to decrease the ratio of A/(B&plus;C).

Colored and clear nail polish compositions comprise a solvent system having no more than 30 weight % water, a film forming acrylic binder prepared from (meth)acrylic monomers and stirene and which further contain specific adhesion promoting monomers or monomer combinations selected from (1) anhydride, anhydride plus acid, anhydride plus ureido, anhydride plus beta-diketone; (2) acid plus hydroxy; and (3) ureido, ureido plus acid, or ureido plus beta-diketone have properties equal to or better than commercially available nail polish compositions and permit the formulation of all acrylic pigmented nail polish compositions.

An aqueous coating composition comprising a dispersed graft copolymer characterized by macromonomers attached at a terminal end thereof to a polymeric backbone which is acid functional, wherein the functional groups have been neutralized.
