Methods and systems of improving security of a computing system having a network of embedded devices are disclosed. The method includes starting a timer of a predetermined length of time, obtaining an expected number of cyclic messages to be received within the predetermined length of time, incrementing a message counter each time a cyclic message is received within the predetermined length of time, incrementing a set counter in response to an actual number of cyclic messages received by the end of the predetermined length of time exceeding the expected number of cyclic messages to be received by a first threshold value, and detecting an intrusion in the system in response to the set counter exceeding a second threshold value by the end of the predetermined length of time.

Method and system for detecting intrusion in a vehicle system

A system for conducting wireless communications between a vehicle computer and a remote system includes a passive radio frequency tag attached to a vehicle and electrically connected to at least one vehicle computer via an information bus, and a tag interface unit electrically connected to a remote computer system. The remote system is operable to control communications with one or more of the vehicle computers via a radio frequency link established between the tag and tag interface unit. The tag preferably includes a microprocessor-based computer electrically connected to the information bus, wherein the tag computer operates as a gateway for communications between the remote computer and any of the onboard vehicle computers including a vehicle/engine control computer, an interface module computer and a transmission control computer. The system preferably includes means for notifying the vehicle operator of various statuses of the communications being conducted, wherein the remote system is operable to control such notifying means.

A system for recalibrating a remote electronic control system, such as an engine control module (ECM), includes a computer maintaining a database of calibration upgrades and a history of recalibrations for specifically identified ECMs. Software routines determine whether the recalibration history includes the latest calibration upgrades, and if not, automatically downloads those upgrades to the ECM. The software also compares an access password for the ECM to entries in a library of acceptable passwords, and if a match therebetween is found access to the ECM is allowed for downloading recalibration information thereto. The system also contemplates a protocol for verifying the integrity of data downloaded from the ECM to the computer. Types of data susceptible to error are identified, and the downloaded information is evaluated to determine if the susceptible types of data are present. If so, and if correctable errors exist, the downloaded trip information is corrected.
