An improved handheld electronic device and an associated method are provided in which time data regarding certain aspects of a messaging conversation on a handheld electronic device are made available to a user. Such time data is provided, for instance, in situations where an interruption has occurred during a messaging conversation. Time data can also be provided to a user on demand in certain circumstances.

Method and apparatus for previewing new events in a computing device having a plurality of applications for managing respective events are described. Individual applications are each represented by an application icon on a screen of a graphical user interface for the device. In response to a new event of a one of the applications, the application's icon is visually modified to notify of the new event. A visual modification may be determined in response to the new event, for example, to preview a content of the event. The visual modification may include a count of all new events that remain to be disposed. On a selection of the visually modified icon, additional previewing may be provided. Activation of the application having a visually modified application icon may be configured to automatically initiate the application at the new event.

An improved handheld electronic device and an associated method are provided in which enhanced information regarding an 'availability' of a user of a handheld electronic device is provided to another electronic device in a messaging environment. Such availability data provides step-wise indications of the relative availabilities of one or more users of electronic devices in a messaging environment. The step-wise indications can, for instance, range from an availability level of 'currently active' to several levels of nonavailability. The device and method can be incorporated into an existing messaging environment.

Handheld electronic device and associated method for indicating delivery status of a message

A system, computer program product, and method for displaying a warning graphic for traffic congestion is provided. The method begins with determining a mobile device approaching a zone comprising traffic congestion. Next a first warning graphic of the traffic congestion is displayed to the at least one mobile device approaching that zone, the warning graphic displayed on the one mobile device. A location of the mobile device is tracked overtime approaching that zone. The mobile device approaching is updated that zone regarding a progress of the traffic congestion indicated in the first warning graphic by displaying at least one follow-up warning graphic on the at least one mobile device, provided prior to the traffic congestion being cleared.

The present invention provides a method for transferring an application state, of a first application being executed on a first electronic device, from the first electronic device to a second electronic device that is coupled to communicate with the first electronic device. The method comprises transmitting at least one application state element to the second electronic device and executing a second application on the second electronic device according to the application state elements.

A system and method for providing traffic notifications to mobile devices is provided. The system obtains device data from a plurality of mobile devices within a similar area, gathered using, e.g., a GPS system. According to the speed that the mobile devices are travelling and the location of the similar area, traffic events can be identified and other mobile devices notified to provide dynamic updates as traffic situations change. Follow up notifications can be provided to update the user regarding the progress of traffic congestion, detours can be suggested, and various alerts provided. The mobile device may be connected to or part of a vehicle and leverage the notification system to provide different types of alerts and to notify users using various mechanisms.

A method and apparatus for managing IM conversations is provided. In response to idle time and, preferably, read message status, particular current conversations are removed from a list of current conversations. The removed conversations may be moved to an archive which may be automatically maintained in response to size constraints. An archive interface is facilitated to review conversations, save all or portions thereof, delete, etc. The archived conversations are preferably associated with the contact for the conversation to show a history of conversations.
