A method of providing a minimally invasive hip arthroplasty in conjunction with a main incision formed through a patient's skin and soft tissue in the patient's hip, including providing an instrument having a main body and an arrangement for guiding the formation of a portal incision and a small path to the patient's acetabulum along an impaction axis. A trocar is placed through a guide ring on an arm of the instrument to form the portal incision and small path. Impaction of an acetubular shell is carried out along the impaction axis thus formed.

An adjustable screwdriver for selectively driving an adjustable compression screw into a substrate. A distal tip of a adjustable head driver is configured to engage an adjustable head of an adjustable compression screw. A shaft driver is concentrically disposed in the adjustable head driver. A distal tip of the shaft driver is configured to engage the head of the screw shaft of the adjustable compression screw for use in rotating the screw shaft. The shaft driver is configured to selectively lock in an even driving position, in which the adjustable head driver and the shaft driver cooperatively drive the adjustable head and the screw shaft. The shaft driver is configured to selectively lock in a retracted driving position wherein the distal tip of the shaft driver is recessed in the adjustable head driver to thereby drive the adjustable head without the shaft driver driving the screw shaft.

Multi-use screwdriver for adjustable compression screws

An instrument for use in minimally invasive hip surgery, the instrument being for use in forming and using a portal incision in a hip arthroplasty procedure to implant an acetabular implant. In particular, the instrument is useful for both alignment and insertion/impaction of an acetabular shell. Furthermore, the instrument is suitable for assuring the shell is impacted with the proper abduction and version in left or right hips.

An instrument for hip arthroplasty having an impaction body attached to an end of a main body. The impaction body is positionable inside a patient's hip and has an axis coaxial with an impaction axis. A leading end of the impaction body is configured to selectively engage an acetabular shell for use during impaction of the shell into an acetabulum. An arm extends from the main body and has a guide ring at an end thereof. The guide ring has an axis coaxial with the impaction axis. A trocar is inserted through the guide ring and along the impaction axis to make a path through underlying soft tissue for insertion of an impacting instrument. A rotatable handle on the main body indicates whether the main body is in a proper position in either a right or left hip.

Instrument for use in minimally invasive hip surgery

An adjustable drill for use in implanting orthopedic screws, such as adjustable compression screws having a separate adjustable head. The adjustable drill comprises a primary drill bit and a countersink drill bit encircling the primary drill bit. The countersink drill bit is configured to selectively slide along the primary drill bit for use in selecting a drill depth. The countersink drill bit is associated with a stop member that is configured to selectively lock the countersink drill bit at one of a plurality of selected positions along the primary drill bit to thereby establish a drill depth. The drill depth corresponds to the size of a selected screw implant, allowing the drill to be used as a trial. The adjustable drill forms a bore having a primary bore and a countersunk entry.
