In accordance with one implementation, a method for adaptive in-field recalibration includes detecting a potential environmental disturbance for a first storage node in a mass storage system based on an indicator external to the first storage node, and initiating a recalibration of an operational parameter of the first storage node responsive to the detection.

An apparatus includes a buffer and a processor. The buffer contains a plurality of commands pending for a data storage medium. The processor is configured to sort the commands in an execution efficiency favorable manner, which reveals a most favorable command for execution, compare a skip count for each of the commands to a threshold count, the skip count corresponding to a number of times execution of the command has been skipped in favor of execution of another command, and execute one of the commands having a skip count that has reached the threshold count over the execution of the most favorable command.

Prioritizing commands in a data storage device

Systems and methods are disclosed for overlap detection using bitmask region trackers. In an embodiment, an apparatus may comprise a controller configured to maintain a count of writes associated with a selected area of a data storage medium, generate an overlap check bitmask, including an overlap check bit for each of multiple regions of the selected area and that represent an indication of a previous write associated with a respective region from the multiple regions, generate a write check bitmask based on a received write, the write check bitmask including a write check bit for each of the multiple regions of the selected area and representing which of the multiple regions are related to the received write, and increment the count of writes based on comparing the overlap check bitmask with the write check bitmask.

In an illustrative example, a method includes storing, in a control system for a device, a value for a first interval of time. The value indicates a minimum interval of time required for the device to remain in a lower power operating mode to provide energy savings at least equal to an energy cost associated with transitioning between the lower power operating mode and a higher power operating mode. The method further includes receiving a signal that instructs the device to transition from the lower power operating mode to the higher power operating mode. A method for placing a predetermined number of notch filters in a disc drive servo control system to attenuate noise frequencies, in order of decreasing resonance magnitudes, is disclosed. The method involves calculating an open loop response for a response spectrum of the drive, calculating a notch filter for any noise frequency that exceeds a threshold, mathematically applying the notch filter into the servo control system, recalculating the open loop response and applying another filter for a noise frequency that exceeds the threshold and repeating until no noise frequencies exceed the gain threshold; selecting another frequency range and repeating the same process until a predetermined number of notch filters has been placed in the servo control system.

Rangeless servo notch optimization

Apparatus and method for enhancing disc drive reliability by applying reduced read bias levels to read elements of a disc drive during an idle mode of operation. A preamplifier driver circuit applies an operational read bias signal of selected, nonzero magnitude to the read element to transduce data from a recording surface during an active mode. Once a predetermined period of inactivity occurs during which host data transfer commands are not processed, the disc drive enters the idle mode and the preamplifier reduces the read bias signal magnitude. The reduced bias level during the idle mode reduces thermal stress and electromigration within the read element while still allowing data to be transduced from the recording surface as the drive performs a dithering operation to move the head to different tracks on the recording surface.
