Impact testing apparatuses are disclosed which simulate and measure various impact-related events associated with the operation of a drug delivery device. The impact testing apparatus may include an impactor configured to simulate a plunger rod of the drug delivery device, and a guide sleeve configured to receive a syringe corresponding to the drug delivery device. The syringe may have a proximal end, a distal end defining an outlet, and an interior chamber extending between the proximal and distal ends and carrying a plunger. Additionally, the impact testing apparatus may include an energy source configured to reduce a distance between the impactor and the plunger so that the impactor strikes the plunger. Various sensors may be included to measure characteristics of one or more impacts caused by the impactor. Methods of impact testing a syringe filled with a fluid and carrying a plunger are also disclosed.

Impact testing apparatuses and methods for drug delivery devices

A biocompatible membrane composite including a cell impermeable layer and a mitigation layer is provided. The cell impermeable layer is impervious to vascular ingrowth and prevents cellular contact from the host. Additionally, the mitigation layer includes solid features. In at least one embodiment, mitigation layer has therein bonded solid features. In some embodiments, the cell impermeable layer and the mitigation layer are intimately bonded or otherwise connected to each other to form a composite layer having a tight/open structure. A reinforcing component may optionally be positioned external to or within the biocompatible membrane composite to provide support to and prevent distortion. The biocompatible membrane composite may be used in or to form a device for encapsulating biological entities, including, but not limited to, pancreatic lineage type cells such as pancreatic progenitors.

A drug injection device () including a housing () for holding a container () having a needle () for penetrating skin and a plunger () for expelling a drug stored in the container. A method for determining predicted failure rates of drug injection devices includes receiving a set of parameters specifying physical properties of a syringe, a liquid drug, and a drug injection device configured to deliver the liquid drug to a patient via the syringe, the drug injection device including a mechanism that drives a plunger rod toward a plunger of the syringe encased in a syringe carrier. The method also includes receiving failure rate data specifying a measured rate of failure of the drug injection device in response to various peak pressures within the syringe, applying the set of parameters to a kinematic model of the drug injection device to determine a predicted peak pressure within the syringe, determining a probability of failure of the drug injection device using the failure rate data and predicted peak pressure, and providing an indication of the determined probability of failure to an output device.

A method for performing a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure on a partial occlusion within a blood vessel, includes positioning a guide having a sensor configured and adapted to measure at least one of pressure, volume or flow within a blood vessel, advancing the guide through an at least partial occlusion within the blood vessel such that the sensor is downstream of the occlusion, measuring at least one of pressure, volume or flow downstream of the occlusion using the sensor and analyzing data obtained from the sensor to assist in determining the viability of tissue of the blood vessel downstream of the occlusion.

Systems for diagnosing and/or treating medical conditions

An injection device, method, and system for drug delivery includes a primary container for storing a drug, the container having a stopper movably disposed in the container for expelling the drug, an injection drive mechanism comprising a plunger for acting on the stopper and an energy source for exerting a force on the plunger to cause the plunger to act on the stopper to expel the drug, the force causing the plunger to accelerate to a velocity prior to acting on the stopper, and a damping mechanism for reducing the velocity of the plunger prior to acting on the stopper. The damping mechanism can include a dashpot or an energy absorbing material associated with the plunger. Alternatively or additionally, the damping mechanisms can include absorbing material disposed between support members of an outer casing of the injection device and the primary container.

A drug delivery system is disclosed that includes a drug delivery device having a reservoir, a delivery cannula having a proximal end in fluid communication with the reservoir and a distal end to be received within a patient, and one or more controllable elements. The controller may be configured to use the one or more sensors to determine a condition or an operational state of the drug delivery device. Controllable drug delivery system and method of use

A drug delivery system is disclosed that includes a drug delivery device having a reservoir and a delivery cannula having a proximal end in fluid communication with the reservoir and a distal end to be received within a patient. The drug delivery system may further include one or more sensors coupled to the drug delivery device, a wireless transmitter, and a controller coupled to the one or more sensors and the wireless transmitter. The controller may be configured to use the one or more sensors to determine a condition or an operational state of the drug delivery device, and control the wireless transmitter to wirelessly transmit one or more reports representative of the condition or the operational state of the drug delivery device. A method for use with a drug delivery device is also disclosed.

Drug delivery system and method of use

An injection device, method, and system for drug delivery includes a container for storing a drug, the container having a stopper movably disposed in the container for expelling the drug; an injection drive mechanism having a plunger for acting on the stopper and an energy source having a first selected potential energy for exerting a force on the plunger to cause the plunger to act on the stopper to expel the drug; and a plunger loading mechanism for substantially preventing the plunger from accelerating to a predetermined velocity before it acts on the stopper. The plunger loading mechanism may be a spring having a second selected potential energy for reducing or eliminating a distance between the plunger and the stopper, prior to the plunger accelerating to the velocity. The second selected potential energy of the spring may be less than the first selected potential energy of the energy source.

A method for determining predicted failure rates of drug injection devices includes receiving a set of parameters that specify physical properties of (i) a syringe, and (ii) a liquid drug, and (iii) a drug injection device configured to deliver the liquid drug to a patient via the syringe. A drug delivery device includes a housing defining a shell comprising a front portion and a rear portion slidably coupled to the front portion, a drug delivery assembly at least partially disposed within the housing, at least one electronic component, a power source which powers the electronic component, and a switch assembly. The switch assembly is adapted to selectively cause the power source to provide power to the at least one electronic component.
