A patient parameter monitoring pod in embodiments of the teachings may include one or more of the following features: (a) portable housing containing a power supply, (b) a patient parameter module connectable to a patient via lead cables to collect patient data, the patient data including at least one vital sign, (c) a transceiver adapted to wirelessly transmit the patient data to a defibrillator, (d) a data port adapted to supply the patient data via a direct electrical connection to the defibrillator, and (e) a carrying handle extending from the housing proximate a patient lead cable port that permits connection of the lead cables to the pod, the carrying handle positioned to protect the patient lead cable port and the patient lead cables attached to the port from direct impact.

A pacemaker/monitor (10) is disclosed for applying a pacing current to a patient through a pair of pacing electrodes (12). The pacemaker/monitor includes a plurality of manual inputs (26) for use by an operator and a microprocessor (16) that responds to programmed instructions stored in read-only memory (20). Cooperatively, these components control the operation of the pacemaker/monitor. In that regard, the desired magnitude of the pacing current in input to the pacemaker/monitor via a limitless rotary current control (46), formed by a rotary pulse generator (52) and a decoder circuit (50). The microprocessor monitors the operation of the various manual inputs and sets the pacing current to zero milliamperes in the event one of the inputs is used, regardless of the position of the rotary pulse generator. For example, when the pacemaker/monitor is turned ON, or the pacing mode of operation is selected, the pacing current is zeroed. Subsequent adjustments in the pacing current are then governed by the microprocessor in response to rotation of the rotary pulse generator. The use of the rotary pulse generator advantageously allows the pacing current level to be quickly adjusted, while the automatic rezeroing of the pacing current decreases the likelihood of an unduly high and potentially painful pacing current being inadvertently applied to the patient.

Limitless rotary pacing current control method and apparatus

A device is disclosed for making blood pressure measurements using an inflatable cuff (12), wherein the cuff deflation rate is established based upon prior blood pressure measurements. The cuff is adapted for applying pressure to a patient adjacent a blood vessel. the device includes means (14, 16) for inflating and deflating the cuff, a sensor system (60) for providing sensor signals during cuff deflation that correspond to the cuff pressure and to the blood flow surges in the blood vessel, and a process controller (100). The process controller causes inflation of the cuff to a first pressure and subsequent deflation of the cuff from the first pressure to a lower second pressure at a preestablished deflation rate, the inflation and subsequent deflation of the cuff comprising one measurement cycle. The process controller also processes the sensor signals provided during a given measurement cycle in order to determine at least one blood pressure value indicative of the patient's blood pressure for that measurement cycle. The process controller includes parameter setting means for establishing the cuff deflation rate for a given measurement cycle based upon the blood pressure value determined during at least one previous measurement cycle. The parameter setting means may establish the deflation rate based upon both blood pressure and pulse rate values determined during previous measurement cycles. The deflation rate may be established so as to provide a predetermined number of blood flow surges between systolic and diastolic pressures in the given measurement cycle.
