A flow regulation system for downlink communication includes a fixed flow valve and a variable flow valve on a discharge line. A pressure sensor is located between the fixed flow valve and the variable flow valve. A sinusoidal communication flow pattern in the drilling fluid is generated by adjusting the position of the variable flow valve based on measured valve pressures from the pressure sensor.

A fluidic modulator in accordance to an aspect includes a body forming a flow aperture between an inlet and an outlet, the flow aperture providing a constriction to a fluid flowing axially from the inlet to the outlet, and a moveable element having a shaft portion disposed through the body and a tip end selectively positionable in the flow aperture to alter the flow aperture.

A system for drilling a subterranean wellbore includes a bottom hole assembly (BHA) coupled to a downhole end of a drill string. The BHA includes an electronic controller having a processor. The drill string includes downhole and uphole portions with the downhole portion made up of wired drill pipe and the uphole portion made up of non-wired drill pipe. The downhole portion further includes at least one downhole tool or sensor sub in communication with the BHA via the wired drill pipe communication link. Methods for making sensor measurements, downlinking data and/or commands to the BHA, and actuating a downhole tool make use of the system.

A system for use in a drilling operation that includes uphole electronic equipment and a drill string suspended in an earth borehole, a section of wired drill pipe that is part of a communication link between a downhole tool and the uphole electronic equipment, an interface for communicating between the section of wired drill pipe and a communication source/destination. The system includes a housing having a generally cylindrical outer shape which has a passage there through. The housing has a WDP end connectable to the section of wired drill pipe and a further end connectable to the communication source/destination. The system also includes a WDP circuit module disposed within the housing. The WDP circuit module electrically coupleable with the wired drill pipe section. The system includes a further circuit module, disposed within the housing, which is electrically coupled with the WDP circuit module and electrically coupleable with the communication source/destination.

Interface and method for wellbore telemetry system

Systems and methods for monitoring and/or operating a rig site system are provided. In accordance with one embodiment, a method for monitoring a rig site system may include obtaining sensor data at a rig site and transmitting pre-processed sensor data pertaining to the sensor data from the rig site over a network link to a monitoring site. The method may also include demodulating the pre-processed sensor data at the monitoring site to produce demodulated data. The method may also include analyzing the demodulated data at the monitoring site. The sensor data may comprise at least one of surface sensor data, MWD sensor data, or LWD sensor data, or any combination thereof.

Method and apparatus for off-rig processing rig sensor data

A wellbore communication system for a wellsite having a downhole tool deployed from a rig into a wellbore penetrating a subsurface formation is provided. A technique for communicating data within a wellbore is provided. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving digital data and encoding the digital data into symbols each representative of one or more data bits of the digital data. In this embodiment, the method also includes modulating the phase of an acoustic wave within the wellbore to represent the plurality of symbols, wherein modulating the phase of an acoustic wave includes changing the phase of the acoustic wave such that the acoustic wave includes smooth phase transitions between successive phases representative of the plurality of symbols. Various additional methods, systems, and devices are also provided.

A digital signal processing receiver, a system and/or a method identifies a decoded signal. The receiver, system and/or method extract at least one sequence of one or more symbols from a digital incoming signal to generate an extracted sequence of symbols. The receiver, system and/or method generate a first result based on a comparison of the extracted sequence of symbols and one or more possible matching digital signals of a set of idealized model data according to a Bayesian probability theory. The receiver, system and/or method generates a second result based on a comparison of an equalized version of the digital incoming signal and the one or more possible matching digital signals. The receiver, system and/or method generates a third result based on a comparison of the extracted sequence of symbols and one or more possible matching digital signals of a modified set of idealized model data. The receiver, system and/or method compare the first, second and third results to determine an idealized result, and identify a decoded signal for the actual incoming signal based on the idealized result.

The disclosure has application for use in conjunction with an operation of drilling an earth borehole using: a drilling rig, a drill string having its generally upper end mechanically coupleable with and suspendable from the drilling rig, and a bottom hole assembly adjacent the lower end the drill string, the bottom hole assembly including a drill bit at its lower end. A method is set forth for obtaining information about at least one parameter sensed at the bottom hole assembly, including the following steps: providing at least one measuring device in the bottom hole assembly, the at least one measuring device producing measurement data representative of a measured condition at the bottom hole assembly; providing an uphole processor system at the earth's surface; providing a drill string telemetry system coupled with the at least one measuring device and coupled with the uphole processor system; and transmitting the data from the measuring device to the uphole processor system via the drill string telemetry system.

A downlink system that includes at least one mud pump for pumping drilling fluid from a drilling fluid storage tank to a drilling system, a standpipe in fluid communication with the mud pump and in fluid communication with the drilling system, and a return line in fluid communication with the drilling system for returning the drilling fluid to the drilling fluid storage tank is provided. A drilling fluid modulator may be in fluid communication with at least one of the group consisting of the standpipe and the return line.
