Waveguide substrates, waveguide substrate assemblies, and methods for fabricating waveguide substrates are disclosed. In one embodiment, a waveguide substrate includes an input edge, an output edge, and at least one waveguide within the waveguide substrate. The waveguide substrate further includes at least one input alignment feature within the input edge adjacent to the input end of the at least one waveguide, wherein the at least one input alignment feature is fabricated from a material of the waveguide substrate. The waveguide substrate may also include at least one output alignment feature within the input edge adjacent to the output end of the at least one waveguide, wherein the at least one output alignment feature is fabricated from the material of the waveguide substrate.

Optical filter devices for providing a reflective event in an optical network are disclosed. In one embodiment, the optical filter device comprises an optical filter assembly for reflecting one or more preselected wavelengths and a housing. In one embodiment, the housing comprises a plug end and a receptacle end for optical connection into a link or connection node of an optical network. The housing comprises a passageway between the plug end and the receptacle end, and the plug end comprises a shroud with a single fiber connector footprint. At least a portion of the optical filter assembly is disposed within the passageway of the housing. The optical filter devices disclosed allow the network operator the flexibility to choose where to position a reflective location in the optical network along with the ability to move, add or change the reflective location as desired.

Optical reflective filter devices and optical networks using the same

A connector device for connecting optical fiber endpieces comprising an optoelectronic chip, a fiber end piece holder and a reflection surface. The chip is oriented for emitting and/or detecting optical signals along a first propagation direction normal to a circuit board. The reflection surface changes a propagation direction of optical signals from the first propagation direction to a different, second propagation direction and/or vice versa. The connector device comprises a layered optical stack mounted to the circuit board and designed for propagation of optical signals along the first propagation direction. The connector device further comprises a coupling adapter piece mounted to the layered optical stack that holds and/or secures the fiber end piece holder in an orientation enabling propagation of signals radiation along the second propagation direction. The reflection surface for changing between both propagation directions is comprised in the coupling adapter piece.

A ferrule boot for a fiber optic cable includes a front body portion defining at least one aperture, and includes at least one rear body portion defining at least one guide channel that facilitates insertion of loose optical fiber segments through the at least one aperture. At least a portion of each guide channel lacks a top surface boundary that is registered with a top surface of a corresponding aperture, such that an accessible (e.g., open) top portion is provided to ease insertion of at least one group of optical fibers into the at least one guide channel, with the optical fibers preferably being non-ribbonized. Fiber optic cable assemblies and methods for fabrication utilizing the ferrule boot are further provided.

The application provides a connector device for connecting at least one optical fiber endpiece to an electric terminal. The connector device comprises a printed circuit board and an electric connector plug connectable to an electric terminal. A fiber end piece holder is mounted or mountable in an orientation enabling light propagation parallel to the printed circuit board, whereas an optoelectronic chip comprising optoelectronic active elements enables emission and/or detection of light substantially normal to the printed circuit board. A layered optical stack is provided on the printed circuit board, which layered optical stack comprises a reflection surface for changing the propagation direction between parallel and normal to the printed circuit board.

Connector device for connecting at least one optical fiber end piece to an electric terminal

Disclosed are optical connectors and methods for making the same. In one embodiment, the optical connector comprises an optical body, one or more first magnetic materials attached to the optical body, a housing, and one or more second magnetic materials attached to the housing. The first magnetic material(s) provide alignment with an optical element of a complimentary receptacle and the optical body may include one or more openings for receiving the first magnetic materials. The second magnetic material(s) attached to the housing provide retention of the optical connector with the complimentary receptacle when mated together. Consequently, the optical connector allows for quick and easy assembly along with a robust structure for a large number of mating/unmating cycles. In other embodiments, the optical devices disclosed may further include one or more electrical contacts for making a hybrid connection or have a TIR surface integrated into a portion of a housing.

Optical connectors and complimentary optical receptacles having magnetic attachment

Optical coupling assemblies for silicon-based optical sources are disclosed. In one embodiment, an optical coupling assembly includes an optical coupling carrier frame and a jumper cable assembly. The optical coupling carrier frame includes a frame portion defining an integrated circuit opening operable to receive an integrated circuit assembly, and a connector portion extending from the frame portion. The connector portion includes a channel operable to receive an optical connector of an optical cable assembly. The jumper cable assembly is disposed within the connector portion. The jumper cable assembly includes a plurality of jumper optical fibers, a jumper ferrule coupled to a first end of the plurality of jumper optical fibers, and an optical turn assembly coupled to a second end of the plurality of jumper optical fibers. The optical turn assembly is operable to optically turn optical signals propagating within the optical turn assembly.

Optical coupling assemblies for coupling optical cables to silicon-based laser sources

Fiber optic connector assemblies and subassembly are disclosed. In one embodiment, a fiber optic connector subassembly includes a body and a pivot arm. The body includes a first body shell and a second body shell having a joint portion. The first body shell is coupled to the second body shell. The pivot arm is rotatably coupled to the joint portion. In another embodiment, a fiber optic connector assembly includes a plurality of cable assemblies, a housing, a body, and a pivot arm. Each cable assembly includes a fiber optic cable having a plurality of optical fibers, and a ferrule. The plurality of optical fibers is coupled to the ferrule. The housing receives the ferrules of the plurality of cable assemblies. The body is coupled to the housing. The pivot arm is rotatably coupled to the body. The plurality of optical fibers is disposed within the pivot arm.

Disclosed are optical plug connectors and optical receptacles for making optical connections. In one embodiment, the optical plug connector includes an optical portion having an optical interface and a cover for protecting the optical interface. The cover can translate toward the optical interface when connecting the optical plug connector and a portion of the cover allows transmission of optical signals therethrough. The cover has a sliding fit relative to a portion of the housing and may translate on at least one guide surface of the housing.

Disclosed are optical receptacles for use with electronic devices. In one embodiment, the optical receptacle comprises an optical lens body for receiving and transmitting optical signals and the optical lens body comprising a front face with a recess and a total internal reflection (TIR) surface. A cover is disposed in the recess of the optical lens body for protecting a surface of the optical lens body and also provides a cleanable surface. The optical receptacle also includes a receptacle shell with an open side for housing the optical lens body. and a cover disposed in the recess of the optical lens body.

Substrate mounted optical receptacle

Optical connector systems are disclosed. In one embodiment, an optical port includes a substrate, a laser silicon chip, an interposer, and a receptacle housing. The laser silicon chip includes an optical source, a laser beam emitting surface, and a grating at the laser beam emitting surface. The laser silicon chip is coupled to the substrate such that the laser beam emitting surface is transverse to the mounting surface of the substrate. The interposer includes an interposer fiber support bore, and is coupled to the laser beam emitting surface of the laser silicon chip such that the interposer fiber support bore is substantially aligned with the grating of the laser silicon chip. The receptacle housing includes a receptacle mating surface and defines an enclosure operable to receive a fiber optic connector. The receptacle mating surface includes a receptacle fiber support bore aligned with the interposer fiber support bore.

Silicon-based optical ports, optical connector assemblies and optical connector systems

Embodiments include a fiber organizer comprising an optical interface having a plurality of optical interface-side fiber positions arranged in a linear array, and a cable-side interface having at least two pluralities of cable-side fiber positions each arranged in a linear array. The at least two pluralities of cable-side fiber positions are not collinear with each other, and in some embodiments define a two-dimensional array. A plurality of optical fiber paths extend between the optical interface-side and the cable-side of the fiber organizer such that each optical fiber extends between one of the optical interface-side fiber positions and one of the cable-side fiber positions. Because the transition from a compact bundle of fibers to a linear array occurs within the fiber organizer residing within the plug connector rather than the boot assembly, the boot assembly can be made more compact and ergonomic.

Receptacles and optical connector systems are disclosed. In one embodiment, a receptacle includes a receptacle body defining a connector cavity, wherein the receptacle body comprises a rear wall having a first surface and a second surface. The rear wall includes a ferrule opening dimensioned to accept a ferrule body of an optical connector. A connector engagement portion includes a perimeter notch within the second surface of the rear wall and surrounding the ferrule opening. The perimeter notch defines a connector engagement surface that is dimensioned to contact a portion of the optical connector. The receptacle further includes an active component assembly including a substrate, wherein the substrate is coupled to the first surface of the rear wall, and an active component substrate having an array of active components, wherein the active component substrate is aligned with the ferrule opening of the rear wall.

Optical connector systems for high-bandwidth optical communication

A fiber optic distribution cable includes a jacket defining an exterior of the fiber optic distribution cable and a plurality of optical fibers extending through a cavity of the jacket. The jacket has an access location with a single opening formed in the jacket that extends to the cavity. A distribution optical fiber of the plurality of optical fibers extends through and protrudes from the single opening in the jacket at the access location and is secured by a demarcation point.

Systems and methods of aligning an optical interface assembly with an integrated circuit (IC) are disclosed. The method includes emitting light from an optical transmitter, passing the emitted light through the optical interface assembly in a first direction, and reflecting the emitted light from a reflective surface disposed immediately adjacent a front end of the optical interface assembly to define reflected light that travels back through the optical interface assembly in a second direction that is substantially opposite the first direction. The reflected light is received by an optical receiver that generates in response a receiver signal. The relative position of the optical interface assembly and the IC is adjusted to achieve an aligned position based on the receiver signal. The disclosure is also directed to a test plug for aligning an optical interface assembly to the IC.
