The invention relates to an electrosurgical system for delivering electromagnetic energy at a plurality of frequencies to cause different effects on biological tissue at a treatment site, and in particular to an electrosurgical generator. The electrosurgical generator comprises an electromagnetic signal supply unit for generating microwave energy to be conveyed on each of a plurality of microwave channels, wherein each of the plurality of microwave channels is arranged to convey microwave energy at a different frequency; an output port configured to be connectable to a probe for delivering microwave energy from the plurality of microwave channels; and a signal combiner configured to connect the plurality of microwave channels to the output port, wherein the signal combiner comprises a band stop filter module disposed at a distal end of each of the plurality of microwave channels, wherein the band stop filter module for each microwave channel is configured to block microwave energy at the frequency conveyed on the other microwave channels; and a common signal pathway extending between the output port and a junction at which the plurality of microwave channels are connected.

Electrosurgical generator for delivering microwave energy at multiple frequencies

An electrosurgical instrument having a radiating tip with enhanced flexibility. In a first aspect, this is achieved by shaping the dielectric material in the radiating tip to facilitate bending of the radiating tip. In a second aspect, this is achieved by forming a dielectric body and outer sheath of the radiating tip as separate parts, to enable movement and flexure between the parts. By improving the flexibility of the radiating tip, manoeuvrability of the electrosurgical instrument may be improved.

Electrosurgical instrument

An interface joint for interconnecting an electrosurgical generator and an electrosurgical instrument, the interface joint comprising: a housing having: an inlet for receiving electromagnetic energy from the electrosurgical generator, and an outlet; a slidable trigger on the housing, the slidable trigger being attached to a push rod that extends out of the housing through the outlet; and a single cable assembly for connecting the outlet to the electrosurgical instrument, the single cable assembly comprising a flexible sleeve that conveys the push rod and a coaxial cable that is connected to the inlet. The interface joint may include a reinforcement element coupled to a first portion of the push rod so as to reinforce the first portion. Additionally or alternatively, the interface joint may include a slide limiting mechanism coupled to the push rod and configured to limit a maximum slide distance of an internal tube over the push rod.

Interface joint for interconnecting an electrosurgical generator and an electrosurgical instrument

An electrosurgical resector tool comprising: an energy conveying structure for carrying radiofrequency electromagnetic energy and/or microwave electromagnetic energy; a tool tip mounted at a distal end of the energy conveying structure, wherein the tool tip comprises a first jaw and a second jaw. The first jaw comprises a first pair of electrodes that are electrically isolated. The first pair of electrodes is coupled to the energy conveying structure. The first and second jaw are movable relative to each other between a closed position in which the first and second jaw lie alongside each other, and an open position in which the second jaw is spaced from the first jaw for receiving biological tissue. The first jaw extends in a distal direction beyond the second jaw in the closed position. The first jaw includes a distal end face, the first pair of electrodes being exposed on the distal end face.

Electrosurgical resector tool

An electrosurgical resector tool having an energy delivery structure that provides a plurality of operational modalities that facilitate biological tissue cutting and sealing using radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic (EM) energy and/or microwave EM energy. The tool comprises a static first blade element, and a pivotable second blade element that has a length commensurate with the first blade element whereby, in a closed position, it lies adjacent to a laterally facing surface of the first blade element. The blade elements constitute an energy delivery mechanisms that is compact enough to enable the tool to be insertable through an instrument channel of a surgical scoping device, such as an endoscope, gastroscope or bronchoscope.

In one aspect, the disclosure presents an electrosurgical instrument for performing haemostasis by radiating microwave energy from a distal tip, where conductive radiating electrodes are coated in an insulating non-stick material. In another aspect, the disclosure provides an electrosurgical instrument for performing haemostasis using radiofrequency or microwave electromagnetic energy, where a distal tip of the instrument comprises a conductive hollow needle for conveying fluid to or from a treatment site, wherein the hollow needle is electrically grounded.

Various embodiments provide a microwave amplification apparatus for an electrosurgical instrument. The microwave amplification apparatus comprises: a cable assembly; a proximal launch portion, and a distal amplification portion. The proximal launch portion is connected to a proximal end of the cable assembly, and comprises: a DC source configured to launch a DC signal along the cable assembly, and a microwave source configured to launch a microwave signal along the cable assembly. The distal amplification portion is connected to a distal end of the cable assembly, and comprises: a power amplifier configured to receive the microwave signal as an input signal to be amplified. The distal amplification portion is configured to apply the DC signal as a drain voltage across the power amplifier. The power amplifier has an output that is connectable to deliver an amplified microwave signal to a structure that is configured to deliver microwave energy into biological tissue.

Microwave amplification apparatus for an electrosurgical instrument

Various embodiments provide an electrosurgical system for treating biological tissue. The system comprises: an electrosurgical generator configured to supply pulsed microwave energy; and an electrosurgical instrument. The electrosurgical instrument comprises a flexible coaxial cable arranged to convey the pulsed microwave energy; and a radiating tip portion connected at a distal end of the coaxial cable and configured to receive the pulsed microwave energy. The radiating tip portion has a maximum outer diameter that is 1.0 mm or less, and wherein the maximum outer diameter of the radiating tip portion is smaller than an outer diameter of the coaxial cable. Also, the radiating tip portion comprises: a proximal coaxial transmission line for conveying the pulsed microwave energy; and a distal needle tip mounted at a distal end of the proximal coaxial transmission line, the distal needle tip being arranged to deliver the pulsed microwave energy into biological tissue.

Electrosurgical system

An electrosurgical apparatus for treating fluid-filled biological growths by replacing the fluid within the growth with a substance that assists in delivering treatment energy. The treatment energy may be microwave energy or may be thermal energy derived from microwave energy. The apparatus comprises an instrument having a radiating tip portion, and a fluid delivery mechanism for transporting fluid to and from a treatment zone located around the radiating tip portion. The fluid delivery mechanism comprises a rigid insertion element arranged to extend into the treatment zone, whereby fluid can be aspirated from the treatment zone, and a substance injected into the treatment zone to replace the aspirated fluid. The injected substance has dielectric properties selected to facilitate uniform delivery of treatment energy to biological tissue in the treatment zone.

Electrosurgical apparatus and method of tissue ablation

The disclosure is directed to an electrosurgical generator comprising: an electromagnetic signal supply unit for generating electromagnetic, EM, energy to be conveyed along each of a plurality of channels. Each of the plurality of channels is arranged to convey electromagnetic energy at a different frequency. The electrosurgical generator further comprises an output port selectively connectable to each of the plurality of channels. The output port is connectable to an electrosurgical instrument for delivering the electromagnetic energy to biological tissue. The electrosurgical generator further comprises a tissue identification unit comprising a controller configured to: detect a signal indicative of a load impedance at the output port; determine a set of complex impedance values from the detected signals; identify a tissue type from the set of complex impedance values; and generate an output for communicating the identified tissue type to a user.

Electrosurgical system for identifying and treating biological tissue

An electrosurgical instrument for delivering pressurised fluid to a biological tissue, and for delivering radiofrequency electromagnetic energy and/or microwave frequency EM energy to the biological tissue. The electrosurgical instrument comprises a flexible shaft with an instrument tip connected to its distal end. The instrument tip comprises a planar body made of a first dielectric material separating a first conductive element from a second conductive element, for delivering EM energy to the biological tissue. The instrument tip has a nozzle for delivering the pressurised fluid directly to the biological tissue. An outer sleeve extends over the flexible shaft and a proximal section of the instrument tip to reinforce the flexible shaft and a junction between the flexible shaft and instrument tip.

An electrosurgical instrument having a radiating tip portion capable performing tissue ablation using microwave energy and electroporation (e.g. non-thermal irreversible electroporation) in a minimally invasive manner. The electrosurgical instrument may be used to perform microwave ablation and electroporation separately (e.g. sequentially) or simultaneously. The radiating tip portion may be dimensioned to be suitable for insertion into a pancreas via a surgical scoping device, to provide a rapid and accurate alternative to known RF ablation techniques. By enabling tumours within the pancreas to be treated using a minimally invasive procedure, it may be a viable option to use ablation and/or electroporation treatment for both curative as well as palliative reasons.

The invention relates to a modular electrosurgical system for using electromagnetic (EM) radiation, such as radio frequency (RF) or microwave EM radiation, to treat biological tissue. In one example, control of the modules is centralised in a remote computing device which can communicate wirelessly with the modules of the system. In one example, different optional modules may be combined together with core modules to provide the system with different electrosurgical capabilities.

Modular electrosurgical system, and modules for said system

An energy conveying structure for invasive electrosurgery that provide for combined delivery of (i) RF or microwave electromagnetic energy for tissue treatment (e.g. ablation, coagulation or cutting), and (ii) optical radiation within a common structure that may form an instrument cable of a surgical scoping device. The structure resembles a hollow coaxial transmission line with an optical channel formed within it. The optical channel can lie within a passage that is formed within the inner conductive layer or within other layers of the coaxial transmission. The structure may be used to form an electrosurgical device capable of delivering RF/microwave EM energy, optical radiation and ultrasonic signals to a treatment site along an instrument cable of a surgical scoping device.

Electrosurgical energy conveying structure and electrosurgical device incorporating the same

An electrosurgical instrument which is capable of simultaneously ablating an area of tissue with microwave energy and performing resection with RF energy. The instrument comprises a structure for conveying both RF and microwave energy to an instrument tip that is configured to emit the microwave energy in a manner suitable for ablation (e.g. as a substantially spherical field) and to emit the RF energy in a more focussed manner to enable accurate and controllable resection to be performed. The energy conveying structure comprises a coaxial transmission line for conveying microwave energy. The coaxial transmission line has a hollow inner conductor that defines a passage that supports a second transmission line for conveying radiofrequency energy.
