Processes and devices by which a brittle material substrate may be edge formed and finished to simultaneously remove corresponding damage remaining on the edges in the areas formed by cutting and separation while imposing a desired edge profile and achieving a desired mechanical edge strength. Processes of the present disclosure may include a chemical and mechanical brush polishing process configured to shape and/or polish a surface of one or more thin substrates. A plurality of substrates may be arranged in a stacked configuration, and engineered interposer devices may be arranged between the stacked substrates. The interposers may provide between the substrates and may direct filament placement during brushing so as to guide material removal on the substrate edges. Substrate edge profile shapes, including symmetric and asymmetric profiles, may be formed by strategic manipulation of interposer properties including dimensions, mechanical features, material properties, and positioning.

Method and apparatus for edge finishing of high mechanical strength thin glass substrates

Disclosed herein are apparatuses for screen printing on a surface of a three-dimensional substrate comprising a substantially rigid, substantially planar frame having a perimeter defining a region within the perimeter having a given surface area; and a screen attached to the frame and extending across at least a portion of the surface area, wherein the screen comprises a first portion through which a liquid printing medium can pass onto a proximate three-dimensional substrate; and a second portion coated with an emulsion substantially preventing the liquid printing medium from passing through the second portion of the screen, wherein the screen has a fixed tension of less than about 20 N/cm. Methods and systems for screen printing on a surface of a three-dimensional substrate are also disclosed herein.

Methods and apparatus for forming a semiconductor on glass-ceramic structure provide for: subjecting an implantation surface of a donor semiconductor wafer to an ion implantation process to create an exfoliation layer of the donor semiconductor wafer; bonding the implantation surface of the exfoliation layer to a precursor glass substrate using electrolysis; separating the exfoliation layer from the donor semiconductor wafer to thereby form an intermediate semiconductor on precursor glass structure; sandwiching the intermediate semiconductor on precursor glass structure between first and second support structures; applying pressure to one or both of the first and second support structures; and subjecting the intermediate semiconductor on precursor glass structure to heat-treatment step to crystallize the precursor glass resulting in the formation of a semiconductor on glass-ceramic structure.

Glass-ceramic-based semiconductor-on-insulator structures and method for making the same

Methods apply a layer of material to a glass sheet having a non-planar shape. The methods can each include the step of providing the glass sheet having an initial non-planar shape including a thickness defined between a first sheet surface and a second sheet surface. The method further includes the step of at least partially flattening the glass sheet into an application shape. The method further includes the step of applying the layer of material to the first sheet surface while the glass sheet is in the application shape. The method then includes the step of releasing the glass sheet to relax into a post non-planar shape.

Methods of applying a layer of material to a non-planar glass sheet

Methods and apparatus provide for a structure, including: a first glass material layer; and a second material layer bonded to the first glass material layer via bonding material, where the bonding material is formed from one of glass frit material, ceramic frit material, glass ceramic frit material, and metal paste, which has been melted and cured.

Methods for bonding material layers to one another and resultant apparatus

Disclosed are process and apparatus for inspecting internal inclusions in internally transmissive substrates. The process involves applying a black coating to one major surface of the substrate, submerging the substrate in a refractive index-matching fluid, and scanning the substrate with a collimated light beam. The scattered light signals produced by the inclusions can be detected by the human eye or by using a light detector. By the use of index-matching fluid and the black coating, the signal-to-noise ratio of the process and apparatus are enhanced. A preferred black coating is one cured from an electron beam or photo polymerizable coating composition applied to the major surface. The process and apparatus are particularly suitable for inspecting internal inclusions in an internally transmissive substrate having considerable amount of surface defects or contoured surface that prevent it from inspection in a gas medium.
