A system and method for adjusting the radial tilt, tangential tilt, or a combination of radial and tangential tilt of an optical detection unit in an optical disc reading system can include applying different weighting factors to different signal components depending on which detection area detects the component, measuring a value of a signal characteristic, such as signal-to-noise ratio, of two signals with different sets of weighting factors, and determining an adjustment factor to the radial tilt as a function of the of the measured signal characteristic values.

Method and system for radial and tangential tilt calibration of optical storage systems

A differential phase detector for an optical storage system is set forth. The differential phase detector includes a photodetector circuit arranged to detect light deviations associated with radial errors in the optical storage system. A non-linear equalizer is in communication with the photodetector circuit. The output of the non-linear equalizer is in communication with signal processing circuitry. The signal processing circuitry uses the equalized signals to generate one or more radial error signals.

Optical storage system having differential phase detector

A method, system and apparatus for fault protection using a linear feedback shift register are presented. The system comprises a protected register containing a first portion for holding a value for a sequence of numbers and a second portion for other parameters. The system also comprises a linear feedback shift register circuit configured to write the sequence of numbers to the first portion of the protected register. If the written sequence of numbers of the protected register matches a reference sequence of numbers, a rewrite circuit is configured to write the second portion of the protected register.

Method and system for fault protection using a linear feedback shift register

A system includes a position detection module configured to detect at least a first position indicator and a second position indicator corresponding to a label side of an optical disc. A write clock adjustment module is configured to determine a number of cycles of a write clock that occur between the first position indicator and the second position indicator, determine a difference between the number of cycles of the write clock and a desired number of cycles of the write clock, and adjust a frequency of the write clock based on the difference.

A phase detector comprises a first slicing circuit that generates a first digital signal corresponding to a logic state of a first generally continuous signal. A second slicing circuit generates a second digital signal corresponding to a logical state of a second generally continuous signal. Phase detector logic compares triggering edges of the first and second digital signals to generate a phase difference signal having a pulse width corresponding to a phase difference between the first and second generally continuous signals. Aberration compensation circuitry is in communication with the phase detector logic to ensure generation of the phase difference signal in the presence of signal aberrations occurring at the triggering edges of the first and second digital signals.

Differential phase detector

In one embodiment, a phase detector is provided comprising a first input, a second input, and first circuitry in communication with the first and second inputs, the first circuitry operative to provide an indication of a phase difference between a first signal supplied by the first input and a second signal supplied by the second input, wherein an aberration in one of the first and second signals results in an incorrect indication of phase difference. The phase detector also comprises second circuitry in communication with the first circuitry, the second circuitry operative to provide a correct indication of phase difference despite the aberration in the at least one of the first and second signals. In another embodiment, a differential phase detector is provided.

The exemplary embodiment of a control system includes at least one control component for generating a control signal; a plant for generating a control output responsive to the control signal; and a dual feedback control loop coupled between the control output of the plant and the control component, the dual feedback control loop comprising a combination of a running optimal power control (ROPC) loop, and an automatic power control (APC) loop that run concurrently for generating respective feedback control signals that are input to the control component for generation of a combined control signal adjustment that is used at least in part to generate the control signal.
