An image processing system combines higher-resolution panchromatic images and lower resolution multispectral images using a hyperspherical color space pan-sharpening technique. By converting the multispectral images into a hyperspherical color space, the intensities of the multispectral images can be intensity matched to the intensities of the panchromatic image and then retransformed back to the original color space. The intensity matching can utilize a number of techniques, including, but not limited to, direct substitution of the intensities of the panchromatic image for the intensities of the multispectral images, modification of the intensities of the multispectral images based on predefined statistical models and modification of the intensities of the multispectral images based on dynamically generated statistical models and a selected sharpening parameter &#x3b2;.

System and method for combining color information with spatial information in multispectral images

Automatic generation of a mosaic comprising a plurality of geospatial images. An embodiment of the automatic mosaic generation may include automated source image selection that includes comparison of source images to base layer image to determine radiometric similar source images. Additionally, an embodiment of an automatic cutline generator may be provided to automatically determine a cutline when merging two images such that radiometric differences between the images along the cutline are reduced. In this regard, less perceivable outlines may be provided. Further still, an embodiment of a radiometric normalization module may be provided that may determine radiometric adjustments to source images to match certain properties of the base layer image. In some embodiments, when processing source images, the source images may be downsampled during a portion of the processing to reduce computational overhead. Additionally, some highly parallel computations may be performed by a GPU to further enhance performance.

Method for pan sharpening a synoptic pair of multispectral images. Each multispectral image contains multiple spectral bands of M band groups, where M is a number of band groups in a range of 1 to M. A panchromatic image associated with the synoptic pair and having a p band is also provided. for each band group m in the range of 1 to M, the method includes the steps of (a) upsampling band group m; (b) pan sharpening band group m using the p band; (c) producing a pan sharpened result for band group m; and repeating steps (a)-(c) to produce pan sharpened results for each band group from 1 to M. Pan sharpened results for band groups 1 to M are fused together to produce a master fused image.
