Inserts and features to reduce or prevent spline crash in surgical staplers and/or to minimize damage resulting from spline crash in surgical staplers. An insert for a surgical stapler includes a body and spline covers. The body is configured to fit within a bore of a shell assembly and the spline covers extend inward from the body. Each of the spline covers are sized and dimensioned to cap a distal portion of splines of the shell assembly. A shell assembly for a surgical stapler includes shell splines that are disposed on an inner wall of an inner housing portion that defines a bore. The shell splines include a lead spline that has a leading end positioned distal of a leading end of each of the other shell splines.

Inserts, splines, and methods for reducing and/or eliminating spline crash in surgical instruments

A surgical stapling apparatus (stapler) including a housing, elongated member, and a reload is disclosed. A cartridge is configured to selectively couple to a first jaw member of the reload and includes one or more resilient members thereon. An anvil operably supported on a second jaw member of the reload is configured to compress one or more fasteners ejected from the cartridge. The anvil includes one or more locking members thereon. A knife is configured to translate through the cartridge and anvil when the first and second jaw members are in a closed configuration. Engagement between the knife and the resilient member(s) causes the resilient member(s) to move from an initial configuration that allows the knife to travel distally past the locking member(s) to a final configuration that allows the locking member(s) to engage the knife.

Surgical stapling apparatus

A surgical stapling device includes a reload assembly that includes a locking member to retain a knife carrier of the reload assembly in a retracted position after the stapling device is fired. The locking member may be supported on an inner housing portion of the shell housing or on a staple pusher assembly of the reload assembly.

Reload assembly with knife carrier lockout

Apparatus and methods for improved tissue cutting of circular stapling instruments include a cartridge assembly configured to maximize the force during a cutting stroke. In embodiments, the cartridge assembly is configured to maintain engagement between a knife assembly and a drive member during retraction of the knife. Alternatively, or in addition, the cartridge assembly is configured to prevent incidental advancement of the knife assembly.

Circular stapling instruments

A surgical stapling apparatus (stapler) is provided. The stapler includes a housing, elongated member, and a reload. A cartridge is configured to selectively couple to a first jaw member of the reload and includes one or more resilient members thereon. An anvil operably supported on a second jaw member of the reload is configured to compress one or more fasteners ejected from the cartridge. The anvil includes one or more locking members thereon. A knife is configured to translate through the cartridge and anvil when the first and second jaw members are in a closed configuration. A surgical stapler includes a tubular body portion and a cartridge assembly disposed at a distal end of the body portion for expelling an annular array of staples. Each of the staples of the annular array of staples has a generally bent backspan. An anvil member disposed at the distal end of the tubular body portion is positioned opposite the cartridge assembly to clinch the staples in tissue upon expulsion of the staples from the cartridge assembly. The anvil member has a corresponding annular array of staple forming buckets. Each of the buckets is configured to accommodate the generally bent configuration of the staples to facilitate formation thereof.

Surgical fastener applying apparatus

A surgical stapling device includes a reload assembly that includes a dual-detent system to retain a knife carrier of the reload assembly in a retracted position after the stapling device is fired. The dual detent system includes auxiliary and primary detents to improve the retention force of the knife carrier to minimize the likelihood of inadvertent readvancement of the knife carrier and annular knife.

An anvil assembly is provided. The anvil assembly includes center rod assembly, a head assembly pivotal relative to the center rod assembly between an operative position and a tilted position, and a mechanism for selectively maintaining the head assembly in the operative position.

Interlock assemblies for attaching a loading unit to a surgical stapling instrument are provided. The interlock assemblies are formed on a proximal end of a shell member and on a distal end of an adapter assembly. The interlock assemblies may include a collar member for selectively securing the shell member to the adapter assembly. The collar member may be mounted on the shell member or on the adapter assembly.

Interlock assemblies for replaceable loading unit

A loading unit including a shipping member is provided. The loading unit includes a housing, a staple pushing assembly, a knife assembly, and a staple cartridge. The shipping member is configured to be selectively secured to the housing of the loading unit and prevents advancement of the staple pushing assembly and the knife assembly. The shipping member also retains staples within the staple cartridge.
