A presentation configuration system may receive metadata from multiple users utilizing tax preparation applications. The metadata may be tags or labels of interview segments of the tax preparation applications. The presentation configuration system may create community defined presentation structures from the metadata such that the community defined presentation structure includes an organization of interview segments within a tax preparation application. The community defined presentation structure may indicate how interview segments of a tax preparation application should be presented to a user. Furthermore, a tax preparation application may provide a user (e.g., a taxpayer) with multiple options corresponding to community defined presentation structures. The tax preparation application may receive a selection of one of the options from the user. Thus, the tax preparation application may present the tax preparation interview segments of the tax preparation application to the user according to the community defined presentation structure indicated by the option selected.

System and method for creating and implementing community defined presentation structures

An electronic filing system may receive electronic documents including a completed tax return. The electronic documents may be of a standard document presentation format such as Portable Document Format. The electronic filing system may parse the completed tax return and create transmittable data that includes the completed tax return. The transmittable data may be of a format that is accepted by a taxing authority and different than the original format. The transmittable data may be transmitted to the taxing authority for electronic filing of the completed tax return. The electronic filing system may check for tax return errors before transmitting the transmittable data. The electronic filing system may enable the user to correct errors before transmitting the transmittable data as well as receiving additional error notifications from the taxing authority. The electronic filing system may notify the user of such errors and enable the user to correct the errors.

Embodiments may provide one or more methods of intervention to provide context-specific help or otherwise assist users for which deviations from expected behavior and/or abnormal patterns of behavior are detected. The detection that users are having difficulty with the application and proactive intervention when such difficulties are detected may help to prevent the users from abandoning the application.

The memory stores program instructions executable by the processors to implement an analysis tool. The analysis tool is configured to access representations of a plurality of tax returns and extract compensation-related data from the tax returns. The analysis tool is further configured to compile a version of the compensation-related data into a data store, and access the data store to prepare a response to a compensation query.

The data collection system may be configured to display example documents for the user to verify the identification of a document. A user may enter data for a document via a data entry screen based in part on a scanned image of the document. The document data collection system may analyze the data from documents to determine whether or not any additional information, such as from additional documents, is required to perform a particular task using the document data.
