Disclosed herein is an apparatus for supplying reagent ions, for example ETD or PTR reagent ions, to a mass spectrometer. The apparatus includes a reagent material reservoir, coupled to a carrier gas supply, which delivers an entrained reagent vapor flow to an inlet of a mixing junction through a first flow restrictor. A control gas flow of carrier gas is delivered to another inlet of the mixing junction via a variable pressure regulator and a second flow restrictor. The outlet of the mixing junction is coupled via a third flow restrictor and a reagent transfer junction to an inlet of an ionizer, such as a glow-discharge ionizer. By dynamic adjustment of the output pressure of the variable pressure regulator, the flow rate of reagent vapor may be controlled over a broad range, even for reagent materials of relatively high volatility.

Apparatus for delivering reagent ions to a mass spectrometer

A method of reducing fragmentation of ions generated from a sample during transport of the ions through an ion transport apparatus that comprises an ion funnel portion, comprises: applying a selected DC potential difference between an outlet end of the ion transport apparatus and an exit ion lens that is disposed adjacent to the outlet end, wherein a sign of the selected DC potential difference is chosen so as to accelerate the ions from the outlet end of the ion transport apparatus towards and through the exit ion lens.

Ion funnels and systems incorporating ion funnels

A method is described that involves simplification of UVPD mass spectra and comprises selecting precursor ions for UVPD fragmentation, performing UVPD fragmentation on selected precursor ions to give UVPD fragment ions. PTR may then be performed on the UVPD fragment ions with optional ion parking to yield charge-state reduced UVPD fragment ions. The UVPD-PTR steps may be repeated above n times where n=1 to 50. Ion parking may enhance the intensity of selected lower fragment ion charge states or to increase the intensity of peaks in selected m/z ranges. After a number of PTR-UVPD iterations, fragment ions are mass analyzed. The method provides a way of simplifying UVPD mass spectral product ions by lowering fragment ion charge states and spreading out resulting product ions in m/z mass spectral space when compared to using UVPD fragmentation alone.

Methods of ultraviolet photodissociation for mass spectrometry

A method for analyzing a sample includes trapping a first ion packet in a first segment of a multi-segment reaction cell; trapping a second ion packet in a second segment of the multi-segment reaction cell; and trapping a third ion packet in a third segment of the multi-segment reaction cell. At least one of the first, second, and third ion packets includes precursor ions, and at least another one of the first, second, and third ion packets includes reagent ions. The method further includes mixing the first, second, and third ion packets within the reaction cell to cause a reaction between the precursor ions and the reagent ions to form product ions.

Systems and methods for improving loading capacity of a segmented reaction cell by utilizing all available segments

A method is described that produces product ions for mass analysis, the method comprising the steps of: introducing precursor ions into an RF electric field ion containment device, introducing reagent ions into the RF electric field ion containment device and performing an ion-ion interaction in the RF electric field ion containment device by co-trapping the precursor ions with the reagent ions. Precursor ions and product ions may be retained and/or isolated in the RF electric field ion containment device. The steps above may be repeated until a predetermined amount of reaction completeness is attained. Mass analysis of at least some of the ions in the RF electric field ion containment device may be performed where the ions are mass analyzed either directly from the RF electric field ion containment device.

Methods of performing ion-ion reactions in mass spectrometry

A method of aligning a light beam within a mass spectrometer includes providing precursor ions along a longitudinal axis of the mass spectrometer at two or more precursor ion locations, the precursor ion locations being spatially separated along the longitudinal axis of the mass spectrometer, the precursor ions forming in-vacuum targets. The method then includes directing a light beam from a light source in a direction along the longitudinal axis of the mass spectrometer, the light beam photo-dissociating the precursor ions, and monitoring a mass spectrometer ion signal from each of the two or more precursor ion locations while adjusting the direction of the light beam, thereby aligning the light beam within the mass spectrometer.

Photo-dissociation beam alignment method

An ion source apparatus for a mass spectrometer comprises a refractory metal filament operable to provide a flow of electrons by thermionic emission; an electrical current source electrically coupled to the filament for heating the filament; a vacuum chamber enclosing the filament; an ionization volume within the vacuum chamber capable of receiving the flow of electrons; a source of an oxygen-providing gas or gases; a restrictive fluidic coupling to the source of oxygen-providing gas or gases; and a gas conduit fluidically coupled to the restrictive fluidic coupling, the restrictive fluidic coupling and conduit operable to provide a flow of the oxygen-providing gas or gases into the vacuum chamber so as to maintain a partial pressure of said gas or gases within the vacuum chamber that is sufficiently high so as to inhibit the otherwise formation of a carbonaceous growth on the filament in the presence of a gaseous carbon-containing material.

Apparatus and method for inhibiting ionization source filament failure

A front-end reagent ion source for a mass spectrometer is disclosed. Reagent vapor is supplied to a reagent ionization volume located within a chamber of the mass spectrometer and maintained at a low vacuum pressure. Reagent ions are formed by interaction of the reagent vapor molecules with an electrical discharge (e.g., a glow discharge) within the ionization volume, and pass into the chamber of the mass spectrometer. At least one ion optical element located along the analyte ion path transports the reagent ions to successive chambers of the mass spectrometer. The reagent ions may be combined with the analyte ions to perform ion-ion studies such as electron transfer dissociation (ETD).

Method and apparatus for generation of reagent ions in a mass spectrometer

A system for preventing backflow as part of an ion source arrangement is introduced. Such a system incorporates a novel continuous flow guide within a source, such as an API ion source. In the spray direction, the cross-sectional area that defines the first portion of the internal volume initially decreases in a convergent-like manner and thereafter increases in a divergent-like manner towards the exit opening of the source housing. Such a flow guide has been designed as an integral part of an ion source housing to provide for an optimal unidirectional flow past a sampling orifice of a mass spectrometer inlet. Accordingly, the novel design of the present invention prevents recirculation and thus minimizes carryover, chemical noise, and source turbulence and as an added benefit, enables a user to easily clean such a system during maintenance.

System for preventing backflow in an ion source

A device for improved transportation and focusing of ions in a low vacuum or atmospheric-pressure region of a mass spectrometer is constructed from one or more electro-dynamic or electrostatic focusing lenses that is/are coupled to the first electrode of a stacked ring ion guide (SRIG) to which oscillatory (e.g., radio-frequency) voltages are applied. Such configurations as disclosed herein, minimizes deleterious field effects and/or repositioning problems of desired ion transfer instruments that utilize such stacked ring ion guides by generally configuring the outlet end of the ion transfer device to a desired position within the electro-dynamic or electro-static focusing lens(es).
