Embodiments provide methods and systems for handling optical discs in a media library appliance and for replacing optical drives in the field. In one embodiment, the media library appliance comprises optical disc handling robotics developed for slim form factor slot load drives in a vertical orientation located on both sides of the robotics within a 19 inch rackable appliance. On the system level, the optical disc storage system provides modularity and scalability. The drives reside in field replaceable units ('FRUs') that are oriented vertically on a horizontal backplane. The disc handling robotics access discs on each side stored in horizontal stacks within large disc cartridges. A small disc shuttle cartridge attaches to a large disc cartridge to provide a means to import and export a smaller number of discs from the disc cartridge.

Optical disc storage system

An extremely secure method for keying source contents to a source storage medium provided to prevent use of unauthorized copies at minimal cost. The host processor combines a unique, immutable and verifiable physical attribute of a hard disk drive, i.e., the drive's defect list, with the content to be secured to write a corresponding fingerprinted encrypted content on a source medium. When a local processor wants to use the sanctioned source content, the fingerprinted content is read from a local storage medium. The local processor then decrypts and separates the defect list out of the source content and reads the local storage medium defect list. If the decrypted defect list matches the local storage medium defect list, then the local processor recognizes the local sanctioned medium and continues processing the source contents. Otherwise, a non-matching defect list indicates an unauthorized copy from the source to the local storage medium.

Extremely secure method for keying stored contents to a specific storage device

A conductor trace array includes an electrically insulative support substrate and a plurality of pairs of electrical signal conductor traces and a plurality of pairs of passive electrical conductor traces. All of the traces are formed along substantially parallel paths in a single layer on the substrate. Each pair of the electrical signal conductor traces is arranged on the support substrate such that they are positioned in a space defined between each pair of passive electrical conductor traces. As a result, each pair of signal conductor traces has a passive electrical conductor trace positioned immediately adjacent thereto. The passive conductor traces generally follow a geometry of the signal conductor traces and thereby form a capacitive coupling relationship therebetween. This capacitive coupling relationship increases the characteristic impedance of the signal conductor traces. A preferred application is for interconnecting a head and a preamplifier/drive circuit within a hard disk drive, wherein the interconnecting trace is expressly provided upon an E-block of the activator.

A synchronous calibration test circuit in accordance with the principles of this invention that uses a bandgap reference voltage of a PRML chip and a write clock synthesizer to generate an output reference calibration signal comprising a programmable frequency and whose amplitude is invariant with environmental conditions. This reference signal is injected at the input of a signal path of the PRML chip and measured after the PRML's A/D converter using the synchronous test calibration circuit of this invention. Since the programmable frequency reference signal is insensitive to voltage supply fluctuations as well as temperature and process variations this reference signal can be used to measure and characterize changes in the transfer function of the analog signal path of the PRML chip.

A head suspension has an integrated multi-layer trace conductor array for supporting and electrically interconnecting a read/write head to electronic circuitry in a disk drive. The trace conductor array includes an integrally formed electrical shield which may be grounded or ungrounded and formed to have a depth greater than a skin effect depth at a frequency of an interfering wave front.

A method of holographic recording in a photorefractive medium wherein stored holograms may be retrieved with maximum signal-to noise ratio (SNR) is disclosed. A plurality of servo blocks containing position feedback information is recorded in the crystal and made non-erasable by heating the crystal. The servo blocks are recorded at specific increments, either angular or frequency, depending whether wavelength or angular multiplexing is applied, and each servo block is defined by one of five patterns. Data pages are then recorded at positions or wavelengths enabling each data page to be subsequently reconstructed with servo patterns which provide position feedback information. The method of recording data pages and servo blocks is consistent with conventional practices. In addition, the recording system also includes components (e.g. voice coil motor) which respond to position feedback information and adjust the angular position of the reference angle of a reference beam to maximize SNR by reducing crosstalk, thereby improving storage capacity.
