A battery module incorporates features of both prismatic housings and metal foil laminate pouch housings, and is configured to receive and support electrochemical cells. The battery module housing includes a rigid tubular frame and flexible cover elements that are joined to the frame and close the open ends of the frame. The frame has an inner surface that faces the cells, an outer surface that is opposed to the inner surface, a first edge that joins the inner surface to the outer surface at one open end of the frame, and a second edge that joins the inner surface to the outer surface at the opposed open end of the frame. The first cover element overlies and closes the one open end of the frame and the second cover element overlies and closes the other open end of the frame.

Prismatic-pouch hybrid battery module

A battery module comprises an electrochemical cell including a first dielectric layer positioned on a first side of the cell, a first side plate in opposition to the first side, and a first adhesive layer positioned between the first side plate and the first side. The first dielectric layer defines a first window. The first adhesive layer is adhered to the first side plate and the first side through the first window. Another battery module comprises first and second cells, a base plate, a frame, and a first and second adhesive portion. The frame includes a beam positioned between the first cell and the second cell and is in engagement with a first side and a second side of the first and second cells, respectively. The first adhesive portion and the second adhesive portions are positioned between the base plate and the bottom surfaces of the cells.

A battery module includes a battery module housing that defines an interior space. The battery module housing includes at least one interior wall that segregates the interior space into at least two cavities. The battery module housing and the at least one interior wall are formed of a flexible laminate material, and an electrochemical cell is disposed in one of the at least two cavities. The cell may include a housing formed of a flexible laminate material, or alternatively may be housing-free.

The present invention relates to a battery module for storage of electrochemical cells, including a cover assembly including an inner frame that encloses an end of the cells and applies a compressive force thereto, an intermediate frame that is snap fit to an outer surface of the inner frame and supports ancillary structures of the battery system, and an outer cover that is snap fit to an outer surface of the intermediate frame.

A lithium ion cell includes a housing and positive and negative terminals. The housing includes top and bottom surfaces. The housing includes first, second, third, and fourth side surfaces, perpendicular to the top and bottom surfaces. A cell isolator includes first and second portions made of an electrically non-conductive material. The first portion includes first, second, and third wall members. The first wall member directly contacts the first side surface. The second wall member directly contacts a portion of the second side surface. The third wall member directly contacts a portion of the third side surface. The second portion includes fourth, fifth, and sixth wall members. The fourth wall member directly contacts the fourth side surface. The fifth wall member directly contacts portions of the second side surface and the second wall member. The sixth wall directly contacts portions of the third side surface and the third wall member.

Disclosed herein is a modular battery system having at least one subsystem comprising a plurality of battery modules connected in series or parallel, wherein each subsystem preferably having a first endplate and a second endplate. The battery modules may be bound between the first and second endplates. A plurality of band members couple the first and second endplates to each other and bind the battery module between the endplates. Further, a data collection panel is in electrical communication with each of the battery modules and the data collection panel transmits status information of the modules to a master control module, which converts the electrical into a data transmission through a controller area network (CAN) bus. Status information may include module temperature, module pressure and module voltage, essentially any measurable parameter that may be conducted via an electrical signal. Depending on the needs of a given application, the battery modules may be connected in series or parallel.

Enclosure for battery systems and battery modules

A battery interface assembly for a battery system includes a first end section and a second end section. The first end section provides a source voltage from battery modules of the battery system via a conductive bus bar. The battery interface assembly also includes X intermediate housing sections that receive and house respective sections of the conductive bus bar and that detachably interconnect with each other and with the first and second end sections. The first and second end sections and the X intermediate housing sections are contiguously aligned. X is an integer greater than or equal to 0.
