A system architecture integrates spreadsheet functionality into text. The architecture allows insertion of discrete individual fields, referred to as 'free floating fields', inline with normal textual sentences. In an HTML document, for example, the free floating fields are elements constructed along with text elements and rendered together as an integrated document. Once rendered, the free floating fields present contents that resemble normal text consistent with the surrounding text. The free floating fields offer spreadsheet functionality, including the ability to handle complex formulas, reference values in a separate free floating field or table, and automatically recalculate the formulas when a source value changes.

Spreadsheet fields in text

An architecture integrates spreadsheet functionality into tables commonly used in word processing programs and HTML documents. The architecture presents a table user interface (UI) that resembles a table when not being edited and adds spreadsheet elements to the table when being edited. Underlying the table UI, the architecture separates data handling functions from presentation functions. The architecture includes a table appearance manager to manage how the table appears in a document including such characteristics as table resizing, selection, cut, copy, paste, split, merge, table formatting and so on. The architecture also has a spreadsheet functionality manager to manage the spreadsheet functions for the table, such as recalculation, formula handling, sorting, referencing, and the like. The bifurcated architecture supports cross-table referencing, reference editing, automatic universal recalculation throughout all tables in the document, and nested table structures in which one table is nested within a cell of another table.

A system architecture integrates spreadsheet functionality into text. The values and formula results can also be formatted (e.g., numbers, date, times, currency, etc.), like a spreadsheet, while remaining part of the normal text of a document. The architecture also has a spreadsheet functionality manager to manage the spreadsheet functions for the free floating fields, such as recalculation, formula handling, sorting, referencing, and the like.

A system architecture integrates spreadsheet fields and functionality into text. In one implementation, a free floating field is presented in line with text in a document. The free floating field is configured to present content derived from a source. Upon modification of the source, the content in the free floating field is automatically updated to reflect changes to the source. In a particular implementation, where the source is a spreadsheet, modifications made to the spreadsheet are then reflected in updates in the free floating fields of the text.

The HTML/XML tree synchronization module synchronizes a document with a view or multiple views, after a change has been made to the document. First, the tree synchronization module receives a document change from an application program. An update processor converts the tree data of the document to a character string, and receives document change information from one or more application program interfaces. The update processor utilizes the document change information to update the document tree data character string. The document change information is then sent to one or more application program interfaces to determine the scope and content of the document views. A log generator receives the view change information, and creates record logs for each changed document view. These logs are played by a log player to each view, and each view data tree is updated with the view changes contained in the change logs. The tree synchronization module sends the subsequent view changes to the application program to update the display views.

HTML/XML tree synchronization

A downloading facility for downloading data while rejection of its use may be overridden is provided. In a preferred embodiment, the downloading facility receives a request to retrieve and use an identified body of data. In response, the facility initiates the retrieval of the identified body of data. At a time during its retrieval, use of the identified body of data is automatically rejected. In response to this rejection, the facility provides a user interface for authorizing the use of the identified body of data. During the provision of this user interface, retrieval of the identified body of data proceeds. When the provided user interface is used to authorize the use of the identified body of data, the facility uses the retrieved identified body of data in accordance with the request.

Downloading data while rejection of its use may be overridden

Data requests (e.g., for a hyper text markup language document) made from a client application on a client computer connected to a computer network (e.g., the Internet) are often large. The data received by a client application is often received at a very slow rate due to network congestion and other factors. In addition, the data received may have references to embedded graphical images. If the data received does not contain the display dimensions of the embedded graphical images, then the data cannot be properly displayed until the dimensions of the embedded graphical images are known. When a data request is made, the data transfer rate is monitored. When the receive data transfer rate is slow, and the data contains an embedded graphical image of unknown dimensions, a small placeholder image is automatically displayed for the user instead of the actual data. The small placeholder image holds a place on a display device for the data or the embedded graphical image until the data or embedded graphical image is received. When embedded graphical image is received, the placeholder image is removed, and the display device is reformatted to display the embedded graphical image.
