A blade coupling mechanism for a hand-held surgical cutting instrument includes a first coupling member including a first blade-contacting surface and a first outer perimeter sidewall adjacent the first blade contacting surface. It also includes a second coupling member including a second blade-contacting surface facing the first blade-contacting surface of the first coupling member. The second coupling member includes a second outer perimeter sidewall adjacent the second blade contacting surface. The second blade-contacting surface and the second outer perimeter sidewall meet to define an outer edge. The second coupling member including a bore through the second blade contacting surface. The bore and the second blade contacting surface meeting to define an inner edge. Blade-engaging protrusions project from at least one of the first and second blade-contacting surfaces. The protrusions are spaced closer to the outer edge than the inner edge.

Surgical cutting instrument with near-perimeter interlocking coupling arrangement

A surgical cutting blade for cutting bone material when the blade is coupled to a hand-held surgical saw having protrusions extending therefrom that interface with the cutting blade. The cutting blade includes a distal end comprising a plurality of cutting teeth and a shank portion adjacent the distal end. It also includes a proximal end adjacent the shank portion. The proximal end is shaped to attach to the surgical saw and includes an upper substantially planar surface and a lower substantially planar surface and a side edge extending between the upper and lower planar surfaces. The side edge at least in part defines an outer perimeter extending about the proximal end. The outer perimeter includes a plurality of indentations forming openings configured to receive and interface with the protrusions of the surgical saw in a manner that the protrusions cooperatively impart motion to drive the blade.

Micro-saw blade for bone-cutting surgical saws

A hand-held surgical cutting instrument for cutting bone material with a surgical micro-saw blade has a plurality of openings formed therein. The surgical cutting instrument includes a hand-graspable body for manipulating the cutting instrument and a blade coupling mechanism attached to the body and being configured to attach to the surgical micro-saw blade. The blade coupling mechanism includes a first coupling member including a first blade-contacting surface. The first blade-contacting surface has at least one first protrusion extending therefrom and is configured to engage a first opening in the surgical saw blade. The blade coupling mechanism includes a second coupling member including a second blade-contacting surface facing the first blade-contacting surface of the first coupling member. The second blade-contacting surface having at least one second protrusion extending therefrom and configured to engage a second opening in the surgical saw blade.

Surgical cutting instrument with dual surface interlocking coupling arrangement

An apparatus for delivering fluid, or power syringe, comprises a base, a lever, and a syringe. The syringe has a reservoir adapted for holding a quantity of fluid and a plunger disposed within the reservoir and adapted for movement therein. The reservoir features a clip on one end which releasably secures the end of the reservoir to the base and an inwardly facing annular flange on the second end which substantially prevents the plunger from being removed from the reservoir and substantially prevents leakage. The base of the apparatus features an extension beyond the end of the reservoir containing the clip, thereby providing stability to the apparatus during operation. The plunger features a clip on one end which releasably secures the plunger to the lever.

Power syringe having a base and a lever

A power syringe (10) for use in medical procedures, such as angiography, delivers air or fluid, such as contrast medium, to a patient at operator controlled rates and pressures. In one embodiment, mechanical advantage is created by first and second arms (22, 26) which are interconnected with each other, the base, and the plunger (20). The proximal end of the syringe contains a track (44) that the plunger follows in normal fashion in and out of the reservoir. The track is bevelled from proximal to distal end to create a path with variable resistance. A mechanical stop (42) is at the proximal end of the track to control the length of travel of plunger and secondary mechanical arm. Markings (18) on reservoir (12) indicate the volume of fluid or air in the reservoir. Mechanical arm length, tracking length, and distance to plunger stop will vary with size of syringe to generate appropriate flow and power.

Power syringe

A coronary sinus catheter assembly for the retrograde infusion of cardioplegia solutions into the coronary sinus. The assembly comprises a catheter having a balloon with a plurality of segmented annular ribs, and a stylet having a relatively stiff proximal sleeve and a relatively flexible malleable wire extending distally from the sleeve.

Retrograde coronary sinus catheter

A low velocity aortic cannula having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen therebetween for conducting blood, the distal end being adapted for insertion into the aorta during heart surgery to provide blood to the aorta. There is a diffuser at least partially blocking the distal end of the cannula, and a plurality of outlet openings in the side of the distal end of the cannula. In one embodiment the distal end of the cannula is closed with a cap, and the diffuser is a rounded cone extending generally upstream in the lumen. The outlet openings are located in the sidewall of the cannula. In a second embodiment of the invention, the diffuser has a helical configuration, and partially blocks the distal opening of the cannula. Additional openings are provided in the sidewall to permit flow. According to the method of this invention, an opening is formed in the aorta, the distal end of one of the embodiments of the cannula is inserted into the opening, and blood flow through the cannula is established.

Low velocity aortic cannula

An improved aortic cannula having a sidewall with a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen therebetween for conducting blood, the distal end being adapted for insertion into the aorta during heart surgery to provide blood to the aorta. The cannula has a cap substantially blocking axial flow through the distal end of the lumen. There are a plurality of outlet openings in the sidewall of the cannula adjacent the distal end. The distal end of the lumen is flush with or preferably distally beyond the distal ends of the outlet openings. The aortic cannula may have a bend therein, as is known in the art, in which case the outlet openings on the outside side of the bend are smaller than the outlet openings on the inside side of the bend, to reduce disparity in the flow that would otherwise be caused by the bend, substantially equalizing flow through the openings. According to the method of this invention, an opening is made in the aorta of the patient; the distal end of the cannula is inserted into the opening in the aorta; and blood flow through the cannula is initiated to provide blood to the aorta without jetting.

Stylet for retrograde coronary sinus cannula

A coronary cannula and installation stylet set, the stylet having a shaft extending through the cannula of the coronary cannula to facilitate the installation of the cannula. The shaft has a stiff but resilient proximal portion and a deformable distal portion, shorter than the proximal portion, which can be deformed to hold the distal tip of the coronary cannula in a desired configuration to facilitate the insertion of the cannula into the coronary sinus. According to the method of this invention, the coronary cannula and installation stylet are provided, the distal tip of the coronary cannula is shaped by deforming the deformable distal portion of the stylet therein to facilitate its insertion into the coronary sinus. The tip of the coronary cannula is manipulated into the coronary sinus, and the stylet is removed from the coronary cannula once the coronary canula is in place in the coronary sinus.
