An engine system includes an internal combustion engine, a fuel cell system, a first turbocharger and a second turbocharger. The internal combustion engine has an intake passage, and a first exhaust passage fluidly connected to the first set of combustion chambers. The first turbocharger has a first compressor and a first turbine. The second turbocharger has a second compressor and a second turbine, the second compressor connected in series with the first compressor, and the second turbine being in fluid communication with the second exhaust passage. The first and second turbines are connected in parallel such that the first turbine only receives exhaust flow from the fuel cell system, and the second turbine only receives exhaust flow from the internal combustion engine.

A control system for an engine including a turbocharger disposed downstream of a plurality of cylinders. The control system includes an engine sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of an operational characteristic of the engine. The control system includes a first valve configured to control exhaust flow through a first set of cylinders from the plurality of cylinders. The control system includes a second valve configured to control exhaust flow through a second set of cylinders from the plurality of cylinders. The control system includes a controller communicably coupled to the engine sensor, the first valve, and the second valve. The controller is configured to receive the signal generated by the engine sensor. The controller is configured to actuate the first valve and the second valve based on the received signal. The first valve and the second valve are actuated to adjust exhaust flow received by the turbocharger.

System and method of controlling a turbocharged engine

An engine system includes an internal combustion engine having an intake passage, a first set of combustion chambers, a second set of combustion chambers, a first exhaust passage fluidly connected to the first set of combustion chambers, and a second exhaust passage fluidly connected to the second set of combustion chambers. The engine system includes a first turbocharger including a first compressor and a first turbine. The engine system also includes a second turbocharger including a second compressor and a second turbine, the second compressor connected in series with the first compressor, and the second turbine being in fluid communication with the second exhaust passage. The first and second turbines are connected in parallel such that the first turbine only receives exhaust flow from the first set of combustion chambers, and the second turbine only receives exhaust flow from the second set of combustion chambers.

Engine system and method including first and second turbochargers

A turbine includes a turbine housing having two gas passages of substantially the same flow area. A nozzle ring is disposed in the housing and around the turbine wheel. The nozzle ring includes first and second outer rings, and an inner ring disposed between the first and second outer rings. First and second pluralities of vanes are disposed between the rings. The second outer ring has a thicker cross section than the first outer ring such that a larger flow area is created between the first outer ring and the inner ring than a flow area created between the second outer ring and the inner ring.
