A thermoplastic composition includes from about 30 wt % to about 95 wt % poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and from about 5 wt % to about 70 wt % of a poly(carbonate-siloxane) copolymer having a siloxane content of from about 25 wt % to about 45 wt %. A method of making a thermoplastic composition includes: (a) combining from about 30 wt % to about 95 wt % poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and from about 5 wt % to about 70 wt % of a poly(carbonate-siloxane) copolymer having a siloxane content of from about 25 wt % to about 45 wt % to form a mixture; and melt processing the mixture to polymerize it and form the thermoplastic composition.

Transparent and flexible blends of PMMA and polycarbonate-siloxane copolymer

A nano-composite includes a thermoplastic copolymer includes a polycarbonate copolymer including repeating siloxane units and a plurality of quantum dots. A method of making a polymer film includes forming a masterbatch composition by combining (1) a first thermoplastic copolymer including a polycarbonate copolymer including repeating siloxane units and (2) a plurality of quantum dots; combining the masterbatch composition with a second thermoplastic polymer to form a mixture; and forming the polymer film from the mixture. The polycarbonate copolymer has a siloxane content of from 15 wt % to 65 wt %.

Thermoplastic compositions include: (a) from about 30 wt % to about 95 wt % poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA); and (b) from about 5 wt % to about 70 wt % of a poly(carbonate-siloxane) copolymer having a siloxane content of from about 25 wt % to about 45 wt %. A thermoplastic composition comprising: a polymer material; and a passivated inorganic chromophore comprising an inorganic chromophore and a passivation layer, wherein the inorganic chromophore has the formula: AMM'M&#x2033;O, wherein A, M, M&#x2032;, M&#x2033;, x, and y are as provided herein, and wherein the passivation layer is derived from a passivation material comprising a polysiloxane having at least one functional group that is hydride, hydroxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, epoxy, carboxy, amino, or a combination thereof.

Thermoplastic composition including passivated chromophore

A polycarbonate copolymer contains aromatic carbonate units; optionally siloxane units; and resorcinol arylate ester units. The resorcinol arylate ester units of the polycarbonate copolymer are derived from a resorcinol composition having a hydroquinone content of 50 to 1200 parts per million, a catechol content of 5 to 29 parts per million, and a phenol content of 0 to 2400, each as determined by high performance liquid chromatography, and further comprising an acid stabilizer.

Thermoplastic compositions include: from about 62 wt % to about 99 wt % poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or copolymers thereof; and from about 1 wt % to about 38 wt % of a poly(carbonate-siloxane) copolymer having a siloxane content of from about 25 wt % to about 45 wt %. The compositions are scratch resistant. Scratch resistance may be determined as comprising a scratch depth of less than 20 micron (&#x3bc;m) as measured in accordance with the Erichsen scratch hardness test at a force of 4 Newton (N). Articles including the thermoplastic composition are also described.

Scratch-resistant PMMA and polycarbonate siloxane copolymer compositions

A thermoplastic composition includes: from about 5 wt % to about 70 wt % poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA); from about 15 wt % to about 50 wt % of a first poly(carbonate-siloxane) copolymer having a siloxane content of from about 35 wt % to about 45 wt %; and from about 10 wt % to about 45 wt % of a second poly(carbonate-siloxane) copolymer. The second poly(carbonate-siloxane) copolymer has a siloxane content of from about 15 wt % to about 25 wt % or from about 4 wt % to about 8 wt %.

High ductility blends of PMMA and polycarbonate-siloxane copolymer

Process for manufacturing a densified polymer powder comprising compressing a polymer feed that has a bulk density of less than or equal to 240 kg/m in a roll compactor comprising at least two compaction rolls to obtain a densified polymer material, wherein a gap between the two rolls is 0.5 to 10 mm, wherein the compaction rolls operate at a speed of 3 to 30 rpm, wherein an applied pressure of the roll compactor is 0.5 to 5 MPa, and milling the densified polymer material to obtain a densified polymer powder, wherein a bulk density of the densified polymer powder is greater than or equal to 250 kg/m3.

A method of determining degradation of a thermoplastic when exposed to light and heat includes illuminating the thermoplastic with a desired wavelength of light at a desired irradiance while maintaining the ambient air surrounding the thermoplastic at a desired temperature. The method is useful to measure the discoloration rate of transparent, translucent and opaque thermoplastics such as polycarbonates, the discoloration rate being determined by transmission or reflectance spectra of transmitted or reflected white light through or from the thermoplastic.

A light emitting diode lighting device contains a light emitting diode and a lighting device component, wherein the device component comprises a polycarbonate composition comprising a bisphenol A polycarbonate; and 2,2'-(1,4-phenylene)bis(4H-3,1-benzoxazin-4-one) in an amount effective to provide a composition wherein a molded sample of the composition has a UL94 rating of V-2 or better at a thickness of 0.9 mm; an absorbance of less than 2 a.u. in the region of 370 to 380 nanometers; and an increase in yellowness index (&#x394;YI) of 12 or less at 2.5 mm thickness after heat aging at 130&#xb0; C. for 5,000 hours.

Light emitting diode devices, method of manufacture, uses thereof

In one embodiment, a light emitting device includes a lighting element located in a housing, wherein the housing is formed from a plastic composition including, for example, a polycarbonate formed from reacting, in the presence of a transesterification catalyst, a diaryl carbonate ester and a bisphenol A, wherein the bisphenol A has a sulfur concentration of 1 ppm to 15 ppm, based upon a weight of the bisphenol A; and a conversion material wherein the conversion material includes an inorganic material that converts radiation of a certain wavelength and re-emits of a different wavelength; wherein after the conversion material has been exposed to an excitation source, the conversion material has a luminescence lifetime of less than 10seconds when the excitation source is removed.

Plastic composition comprising a polycarbonate made from low sulfur bisphenol A, and articles made therefrom

In one embodiment, a device can comprise: a light emitting diode located in a housing. The housing is formed from a polymer composition comprising: a polymer material, wherein the polymer material comprises at least one of polyolefins, polyesters, cyanoacrylate, cellulose triacetate, ethyl vinyl acetate, propyl vinyl acetate, polyvinylbutyral, polyvinyl chloride, polycarbonate, polyethylene naphthalate, polyurethane, thermoplastic polyurethane, polyamide, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, cellulose nitrate, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing polymer materials; and a coated conversion material wherein the coated conversion material comprises an inorganic material that converts radiation of a certain wavelength and re-emits of a different wavelength. The coated conversion material can have a coating comprising at least one of a silicone oil and amorphous silica and, after the coated conversion material has been exposed to an excitation source, it can have a luminescence lifetime of less than 10seconds when the excitation source is removed.

Light emitting diode device and method for production thereof containing conversion material chemistry

A plastic article is described having a thickness of 0.5 mm to 5 mm, comprising a polycarbonate thermoplastic composition including polycarbonates containing phthalimidine carbonate units, said composition providing a heat deflection temperature of at least 145&#xb0; C., a light transmittance of at least 85%, and CIE 1976 L*, a*, b* values of L* greater than 92, a* between &#x2212;1.5 and 1.5, and b* between &#x2212;2.0 and 3.0, when tested in the form of a 3.2 mm thick test sample molded at 580&#xb0; F. (304&#xb0; C.) with a 1.7 minute residence time, using CIE illuminant C and 2 degree observer.
