A method and apparatus for the efficient dynamic allocation of additional bandwidth in an optical virtual private network (OVPN) are described herein. A software defined network (SDN) controller may receive a request from an end-user of an OVPN for active bandwidth. Then, the SDN controller may determine whether the OVPN requires additional bandwidth to satisfy the request. As of the request, the additional bandwidth may be pre-deployed, but not yet activated for use. In an example, a path computation element (PCE) of the SDN controller may make this determination. Further, the SDN controller, on a condition that additional bandwidth is required, may determine whether additional bandwidth may be activated based on a policy of the end-user. As a result, the SDN controller, on a condition that additional bandwidth may be activated, may transmit an activation message to one or more line cards of the OVPN to activate the additional bandwidth.

Dynamic allocation of network bandwidth

Methods and systems are disclosed for receiving, with circuitry of a network controller, information indicative of characteristics of incoming data traffic in an information transport network, the network comprising at least one packet switched layer and at least one transport layer; determining to transport the incoming data traffic through at least one determined layer being at least one of the packet switched layer and the transport layer, based on the characteristics of the incoming data traffic and/or network information; determining at least one route for the incoming data traffic through the determined layer; and transmitting a signal containing computer executable instructions to at least one switch, to configure the switch to steer the incoming data traffic through the at least one route of the at least one determined layer. The information indicative of characteristics of data traffic may be gathered/provided by one or more traffic monitor.

Use of switching for optimizing transport costs for bandwidth services

Consistent with the present disclosure, an optical communication system, such as a passive optical network (PON), is provided that includes an optical line terminal (OLT) and a plurality of optical network units (ONUs). The OLT includes a plurality of photonic integrated circuits that have both optical transmitters and receivers provided therein. Accordingly, the OLT may have fewer components and a simpler, more reliable and cost-effective design than a conventional OLT including discrete components. In addition, various ONU configurations are provided that also have a simple design and fewer components. Thus, ONUs consistent with the present disclosure may also have reduced costs.

Wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network

A system, apparatus and method are described for displaying multiple attributes relative to objects in a network management program. In one embodiment, multiple attributes from a plurality of different standards are coalesced together and the coalesced attributes are displayed by a user interface. These coalesced attributes may be shown in such a manner so that inconsistencies between attributes of objects from different standards are reduced or obviated.

Path-level protection for digitally wrapped payloads

The present invention provides a system, apparatus and method for accurately identifying optical or digital impairments on a span using FEC errors identified at an intermediary node. This information may be provided to an end node within a network to switch to a redundant path around the impaired optical path or span therein. In one embodiment of the invention, signal degradation is identified by analyzing FEC data within a FEC decoded signal at an intermediary node. An identification of signal degradation provides an indication of a potential failing span within an optical link, which may be provided in-band or out-of-band to a terminal node so that a signal may be switched around a failing path, or span therein, prior to an actual failure event.

Protection switch decision architecture

A method for protecting a span that connects a first node to a second node in a communication network includes the steps of creating a first protection virtual path connecting the first node with the second node through at least a third node using a routing-protocol and a signaling-protocol and monitoring a failure condition in the span. Upon detecting the failure condition in the span, the method also includes the steps of switching automatically to the first protection virtual path, and creating a new protection virtual path, using the routing-protocol and the signaling-protocol, for each span in the first protection virtual path, connecting two nodes at each end of the given span through at least another node.
