A photonic Rydberg atom radio frequency receiver includes: an integrated photonic chip; an atomic vapor cell; and a receiver member including: a photonic emitter; probe light reflectors disposed on the atomic vapor cell; and coupling light reflectors disposed on the atomic vapor cell such that the pair of coupling light reflectors is optically opposed across the interior vapor space and receives and reflects the coupling laser light so that the coupling laser light is reflected between the coupling light reflectors multiple times in the interior vapor space of the atomic vapor cell.

An atomic vapor cell for performing RF measurements includes: a first optical window of transparent nonconducting material free of electrically conductive materials; an intermediate frame of transparent nonconducting material free of electrically conductive materials; a second optical window disposed on the intermediate frame and including transparent nonconducting material free of electrically conductive materials to minimize distortion of radiofrequency fields by the windows and frame; and a cell aperture, wherein the atomic vapor cell is hermetically sealed by bonding between the first optical window and the second optical window to the intermediate frame.

A quantum atomic receiving antenna includes: a probe laser; a coupling laser; an atomic vapor cell that includes: a spherically-shaped or parallelepiped-shaped atomic vapor space and Rydberg antenna atoms that undergo a radiofrequency Rydberg transition to produce quantum antenna light from probe light such that an intensity of the quantum antenna light depends on an amount of radiofrequency radiation received by the Rydberg antenna atoms, the quantum antenna light including a strength, direction and polarization of the radiofrequency radiation; and a quantum antenna light detector in optical communication with the atomic vapor cell.

A Rydberg atom mixer determines a phase of modulated carrier radiation and includes: a reference radiofrequency source for reference radiofrequency radiation; a modulated carrier source for modulated carrier radiation; a vapor cell to contain gas atoms and that receives reference radiofrequency radiation and modulated carrier radiation, such that the gas atoms produce modulated light modulated; and a transmission detector that receives the modulated light from the vapor cell and produces a transmission signal from the transmission detector for determination of a phase of the modulated carrier radiation, wherein the Rydberg atom mixer mixes the reference radiofrequency radiation and the modulated carrier radiation by the gas atoms in a Rydberg electronic state to produce the intermediate frequency IF that corresponds directly to the phase of the modulated carrier radiation.

A multiple-Doppler radar network can be constructed using only one, traditional, transmitting pencil-beam radar and one or more passive, non-transmitting receiving sites. Radiation scattered from the pencil beam of the transmitting radar as it penetrates weather targets can be detected at the receive-only sites as well as at the transmitter. In a bistatic system, the location of targets in Cartesian space can be calculated from the pointing angle of the transmitting antenna and the time between transmission of a radar pulse from the transmitter and detection at a passive receiver site.

A pyramidal cone absorber structure is equated to an effective absorbing layer model having effective permittivity and permeability properties. A Riccati equation, governing the coefficient of reflection of the effective absorbing layer is derived. A computer program solves the Ricatti equation for the coefficient of reflection using initial values of complex permittivity. Iterative solutions are then obtained using increasing values of complex permittivity until no further reduction in the maximum coefficient of reflection over a specified frequency range is obtained, thus indicating optimum performance of the pyramidal cone absorber structure for a given set of cone dimensions. Optimization of the pyramidal cone absorber structure may also be optimized for a fixed set of complex permittivity values by varying the cone length and backing layer dimensions while maintaining the sum of those two dimensions constant.
