In one embodiment, a personal flotation device that can be worn by a user includes an inflation system including an inflatable bladder, a gas-generating component configured to generate gas using a chemical reaction and inject the generated gas into the bladder to inflate it, and an actuator configured to activate the gas-generating component; a sensor configured to sense one or more physiological parameters of the user; and an inflation control system configured to receive physiological parameter data from the sensor, to determine whether or not the user is experiencing a medical event that places the user at risk of drowning, and, if the user is experiencing such a medical event, to signal the actuator to activate the gas-generating component so as to provide floatation to the user.

Gas-inflatable personal flotation devices

A tethered cannula having at least two curved sections for implantation into an eye and a method for implanting the cannula in the eye. The cannula can withstand ever present and changing rotational forces from eye movement and mechanical forces from the movement of the subject. The cannula can be connected to implantable or tetherable devices that are too large, heavy, or obstructive to attach directly to the eye, such as an intraocular pressure sensor or infusion pump.

Tethered eye cannula and method of use

An implantable and programmable device for bladder fluid management. Several urological conditions hinder normal urinary evacuation. For instance, urinary retention impedes fluid drainage, which can lead to severe complications. On the other hand, urinary incontinence exposes the patients to frequent fluid leakage that can be difficult to manage. The treatment for these conditions are only partially effective and only address the symptoms but not the cause. The current system allows the user to bypass the nonfunctional portion of the urinary tract and urinate normally. The device is user-controlled and can be manually activated to release fluid at will. A notification system alerts the patient when fluid levels are elevated and require drainage. The current system provides patients with an effective solution to manage irregular bladder function.

A system and method for continuous wireless monitoring and powering of at least one sensor is presented. The system is generally comprised of at least one sensor, at least one RF transmitter, an energy harvester, an energy storage unit, a microprocessor and a receiving antenna. Multiple RF transmitters may be positioned in an orthogonal orientation within reach of the receiving antennae to provide equally strong RF fields. The system may additionally include metal shielding around the area in which the system is operating.

Continuous wireless powering of moving biological sensors

The present invention includes an automated method for grading the blurring of ocular fundus images to permit automated grading of severity of vitritis. Standard fundoscopic images are converted to gray-scale images. The gray-scale images are processed through a low-pass filter to eliminate high frequency components. The low pass image is subtracted from the corresponding original image, producing the difference image. The difference image is converted to the final entropy image. The entropy image is processed using Fast Fourier Transform to calculate its power. The final blur score is calculated.

Quantitative image analysis applied to the grading of vitreous haze

A method for controlling intraocular eye pressure via fluid exchange in the body is presented. The method may comprise providing a system to sense and regulate pressure, then implanting the system into the eye. The system may comprise four main components: a cannula, a sensor, a controller and a pump. The method works to engage in a fluid exchange which slowly increases/decreases intraocular pressure until a desired level is reached. Once the desired level is reached, the intraocular pressure is held steady and any external pressure perturbations are removed.
